ciderpress, Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:01 (fifteen years ago)

tim lincecum in a giants snuggie (roxymuzak), Sunday, 28 November 2010 06:07 (fifteen years ago)

I DIED, Sunday, 28 November 2010 10:53 (fifteen years ago)

I think PTT is kidding about Jays fans--the stereotype is that, even when we were winning World Series, we sit there quietly and politely for the duration of the game. I can't remember if it was Winfield or Morris or somebody else, but one of the veterans passing through once berated the city to try to get us to make more noise.

clemenza, Sunday, 28 November 2010 11:51 (fifteen years ago)

Haha, I forgot about that actually. Most of the Jays fans I've known were hard drinking vulgarians. I guess over time I've developed this image of the Jays fanbase as being comprised of guys who get into fights outside of hockey games. I wonder if it'd be useful to make a distinction between fans who go to games and the fanbase at large. Braves fans have a rap for being pretty apathetic - it's kind of overstated considering how good attendance is, but I think it also has to be said that they have a big regional fanbase across the south consisting of people who can't get to games regularly, if ever. It also might be a slight cultural thing, since in the south people go to baseball games to chill out, not go apeshit (that's what college football is for).

ya - even tho i've seen my share of drunken violence in the stands, i'd have to say J's fans are def known as quiet.

normally i think the troublemakers are emotionally scared leafs fans that can't get into the ACC.

got electrolytes (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 28 November 2010 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

xpost to clemenza - it was Winfield

This is sort of a redundant thread, seeing as 2/3 rds of MLB teams' fans can be stereotyped as "people who don't bother coming out to the games, aren't very knowledgeable about baseball, and are more loyal to the local football/hockey/lacrosse/whatever team".

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 28 November 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

i dont really think of cubs fans as "rich" but there's def. a perceived white collar/blue collar split between the cubs and white sox, probably because of northside/southside issues
the big cubs fan stereotype i'm aware of is "doesn't really care about baseball, just comes to wrigley to drink and socialize"

I think the NYT ran a column during the playoffs about pinstriped Wall Street Yankee 'fans' who check out by the 7th inning

Oh, you mean Dodger fans?

SF fans are more loyal to their 401Ks.

Serious question: outside of the MLB teams and cities that existed pre-expansion (in the modern era, post-1901 or so), is there any MLB city or team that is known for having a particularly hardcore, devoted fanbase?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 28 November 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

Feel free to set me straight on this -- there are plenty of people on this board who are more well-traveled than me.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 28 November 2010 22:16 (fifteen years ago)

I was just about to post that the Cardinals are known for being relatively informed fans. That said, I always hear that from people around St. Louis and from commentators that are either paid by the St. Louis Cardinals or used to play for and/or broadcast for the Cardinals (McCarver/Buck, etc)

when you're on transit near the stadium, Cardinal fans are... kinda quiet.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 28 November 2010 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

I guess I'm talking about stuff like cheering for sacrificing to move the runner over, running a long count against an opposing pitcher, etc

st louis browns fans: dead

buzza, Sunday, 28 November 2010 22:40 (fifteen years ago)

the stereotype about dodgers fans getting early and leaving late are basically true, but in my experience this is the case because they truck out from the middle of fucking nowhere like riverside because they actually care enough to go to games..

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 29 November 2010 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

the only dodgers fan ive ever known was a rich record exec

yeah I was gonna post the "cardinal fans are well-informed" canard - not particularly true ime but you hear it a lot

Twins? old team, only been in Minny since the 60s tho, pretty dedicated fanbase

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ipr-wS5iBv0 (Princess TamTam), Monday, 29 November 2010 04:51 (fifteen years ago)

I love the Twins, but in the mid-90's they were at the top of the list for contraction (remember contraction? LOL seems like a million years ago). They'd been near the bottom of the AL in attendance for ages -- even when they won the WS in 1991 they were only 8th in attendance.

Colorado fans are god botherers.

SF fans believe Barry Bonds didn't use PEDs.
