watching the NESN telecast tonight, it comes out that right-hander julian "crazyhead" tavarez takes care of his blisters this way:

crumble an aspirin into dust, mix the aspirin dust with a little red bull, then massage the mixture into the sore spot. tavarez says it dries the skin right out and toughens it up!

also once at a little league game i got stung by a bee, and one of the parents immediately broke a cigarette in half, spit on one end of it, and rubbed that into the sting. it worked, i guess

Nolan Ryan, to take care of blisters, used to soak his hands in pickle brine.

The best is in Korea they had to ban the use of cabbage during games. I guess players who were over heated used to take cold cabbage and stuff it inside of the front of their caps. It was deemed a competitive advantage and removed either last year or the year before.

One time, in little league, I managed to slide into third & got the 3B glove between my legs up in it. The coach made me stand in the dugout and squat, legs spread, 10 or 20 times. And now I have no balls.

Options:

A. Walk it off
B. Rub some dirt on it
C. Grab some bench

Except one time when an ambulance was called for a teammate who had his jaw shattered by a pitch.

Though it was always kind of funny when players would eat a Whopper and french fries between games of a double header in 100 degree heat and later complain of sluggishness and nausea.

played a lot of baseball and remember as a kid getting annoyed by overeager coaches telling us to be careful with the bats. up until as a teenager walking through a school field catching an inning of an 8-9 years old game. saw (and heard) a kid wander near an on-on-on deck batter and catch some aluminum in his temple. i'm sure he was ok after being revived in the hospital, but i almost threw up on the spot witnessing that.

Curtis Granderson:

Dave Bergman, a former Tiger, said that guys back when he played (1975-92) used soaked cabbage under their hats, because it supposedly helps keep your head cool. I don't know if that worked or not, but it would be interesting to have cabbage under my hat while I played. I would be afraid it would start to stink and attract bugs. When I was younger, I soaked my hat in water and placed the hat on my head before taking the field. And while it felt really good at first, once the hat started to dry it began to stick to my head and became uncomfortable. So if anyone has ideas they think will work to help us stay cool on the field, we would greatly appreciate it if you would pass them along.
