Brooklyn Dodgers Part I: The Ghosts of Flatbush (HBO film)
Special Members-Only Preview
Join us for this members-only sneak preview of Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts
of Flatbush, which debuts on HBO on July 11th. Producers Amani Martin and
Ezra Edelman will join members for a screening of this two-part documentary,
examining one of baseball's most emblematic teams, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and
exploring ten definitive years in the franchise's history, from 1947 to

Productions.

The Era, 1947-1957
Roger Kahn, the dean of American sports writers, will moderate a discussion
of the legendary plays, moments, and players that made the years 1947 to
1957 the greatest in baseball history. He will be joined by Dave Anderson,
Pulitzer Prize-winning sports columnist at The New York Times, and Bob
Wolff, Hall of Fame Broadcaster and the longest running broadcaster in radio
and television history.

Gallery Tour: The Glory Days
Glory Days curator Ann Meyerson and curatorial consultant and baseball
historian John Thorn will take visitors on a special journey through the
exhibition and the Glory Days. Along the way they will reveal the stories
embedded in the artifacts-from Joe DiMaggio's 1948 jersey with a black
armband in tribute to Babe Ruth, to the Wollensak telescope that may have
played a key role in the 1951 Giants-Dodgers playoff. The tour will also
describe the behind-the-scenes story of how the objects were unearthed and
how the exhibition came to be.

Sun, July 29, 2:00 PM
Reel Baseball

Join us for an afternoon of silent films from the acclaimed compilation Reel
Baseball (Kino Video, 2007), which The New York Times called "absolutely
fascinating." The presentation will feature The Busher (1919), starring
Charles Ray, Colleen Moore, and a young John Gilbert. Added bonuses are two
shorts: Hearts and Diamonds (1914), made by Brooklyn's own Vitagraph Co. and
starring John Bunny, with scenes from Ebbets Field; and a Felix the Cat
animated short, Felix Saves the Day (1922), which shows the Polo Grounds.
Live piano accompaniment by Ben Model.

The Glory New York Baseball 1947-1957
Literary Panel and Book Signing

Three notable authors who contributed to The Glory Days: New York Baseball
1947-1957 (HarperCollins, 2007)-novelist Kevin Baker, biographer Lee
Lowenfish, and New York Times sportswriter Alan Schwarz-will convene with
Glory Days editor and baseball historian John Thorn on the intertwined
subjects of memory, history, and nostalgia. What do we remember about
baseball, and why? What preserves our memories even as the events that
spurred them grow more distant or we come to view them more incisively? Why
does this mid-century era supply such fertile soil for literary invention?

how wuz it?

Dr Morbius, Monday, 2 July 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't make it, alas. I was in the city, looking for a suit on the two hottest days (Wed/Thurs?), and just about melted. I retreated to my parents house in Jersey Thursday afternoon instead of staying on for the free admittance to the glory days thing.

G00blar, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

maybe I'll try for the Roger Kahn thing on the 12th.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

I am in fact going w/ a friend to the Roger Kahn / Dave Anderson / Bob
Wolff thing.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

Kinda related, did anyone see Ghosts of Flatbush on HBO?

mattbot, Thursday, 12 July 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

no; Jimmy the Mod has HBO!

The panel was a bit deaf and anecdote-dependent, but fun. Had 40 minutes to look at the relics, which are amazing. Don't miss this.

I passed Roger Kahn waiting for his car outside and wanted to tell him that The Boys of Summer was the first 'dirty' book I read --at eleven -- but chickened out.
