Hargrove leaving

Andy K, Sunday, 1 July 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

whoa

and FUCK YES

jergïns, Sunday, 1 July 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

weird timing though, coming on the back of this win streak. i mean, yeah, of course they're going to fade, the lack of pitching will sink them, but you'd think he'd stick it out.

jergïns, Sunday, 1 July 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

local blogger type says given the team’s recent performance, this is almost certainly not baseball related.

good luck then with whatever personal life stuff you got going on, hargrove. even though i never liked you i'm not gonna be all shakey mo about it

jergïns, Sunday, 1 July 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

I still don't understand how exactly they've won so many games.

Is it time to drag out the corpses of Dusty Baker and Joe Girardi again, or will the interim guy keep the job for a while?

polyphonic, Sunday, 1 July 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

rumors are that Ichiro forced him out?!?!?!?

Steve Shasta, Monday, 2 July 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

There is no greater miracle than the turnaround of Jeff Weaver. Hargrove's work is done.

Andy K, Monday, 2 July 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

otm

Steve Shasta, Monday, 2 July 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

"At the beginning, there were complications between us. Since then, I've honestly expressed my feelings to him. He listened to them honorably and very gentlemanlike. That's a strong memory I'll have."

--Ichiro, on differences between him and the outgoing manager.

Alex in SF, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

"He wasn't all cunty about it. I told him about this sword thing we japanese do. he thought it sounded cool."

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

I still don't understand how exactly they've won so many games.

This is a team that got swept by the Astros two weeks ago, for Pete's sake.

Is it time to drag out the corpses of Dusty Baker and Joe Girardi again, or will the interim guy keep the job for a while?

All I've heard about McLaren is that he's highly respected and came close to landing a managerial job on a couple of occasions already. Sounds like the Mariners will give the guy a fair shot.

I've also heard he's a Texan, so "YEEHAW"!

boldbury, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still waiting for this team's shit-ass starting pitching to right the wrongs that their obnoxious WTF hitting has covered up. Don't make me wait much longer, damn it!

David R., Tuesday, 3 July 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

NB: I am an asshole.

David R., Tuesday, 3 July 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

no, they're do for a stretch of terrible. watch kc sweep them or some shit.

jergïns, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 06:12 (eighteen years ago)

The M's 3rd-order adjusted record is 39-40, so if they properly come back to earth "It was Hargrove's LEADERSHIP" will be the Steve Phillips BBTN mantra.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

ichiro reportedly ready to sign 5/100 on friday. yes!!! (also luv u ichiro for that inside the parker)

jergïns, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

WAHT

David R., Wednesday, 11 July 2007 04:30 (eighteen years ago)

Bbbut Zelasko said "HEY YOU GUYS HE'S GONNA BE A FREE AGENT!" at the end of the post-game interview!

Andy K, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 07:51 (eighteen years ago)

inside-the-parker: lucky bank shot

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, bitch about the WTF contract offer if you're gonna bitch.

David R., Wednesday, 11 July 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

The inside-the-parker was fluky, but almost all of them are.

polyphonic, Thursday, 12 July 2007 06:54 (eighteen years ago)

90 MILLION INSIDE THE PRAK HOMERUN!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 12 July 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't it possible Ichiro is worth the ridic money when international marketing and other ancillaries are factored in?

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 12 July 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I guess, but that's still a lot of moolah for a guy whose value is dependant (sp?) on his BA and his speed. And if Ichiro's all about winning it all, as he seemed to be when he talked about leaving Washington state behind, Seattle's probably the last place to be (until the other Billy B calls it quits).

Also: WTF SEATTLE PLAY DOWN TO YOUR LEVEL ALREADY if only because this fluky crap'll instill false hope that the team, as it exists right now, can make it to the next level with a minor change or two. Tho if one of those changes is swapping out Jose Vidro's offense & Raul Ibanez's defense for Adam Jones, then keep on keepin' on, y'all.

David R., Thursday, 12 July 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

Has Seattle developed any starting pitching on their farm that hasn't had major arm troubles and realized Major League success?

David R., Thursday, 12 July 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

90 mil doesnt seem so bad considering the going rate for star center fielders eg. vernon wells (tho wells is, what, 5 years younger?).

do nips even care about ichiro anymore? i thought i herd that matsui was more popular over there.

cankles, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

did you just type n*ps? with yr foam tomahawk?

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

lol "n*ps"

Leee, Thursday, 12 July 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

it IS funnier than racist Brave fans

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 12 July 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

ching-chong would have been factually inaccurate, tho i guess i could've gone with slant or yellow menace~

cankles, Thursday, 12 July 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

I think "sneak" is especially apt, given Ichiro!'s penchant for bombing stealing bases.

Leee, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

chinknigs

cankles, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

don't ruin this thread

jergïns, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

Has Seattle developed any starting pitching on their farm that hasn't had major arm troubles and realized Major League success?

aside from felix (minor arm troubles), the short answer is no.

gil meche? sorta maybe not really

jergïns, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Gil's arm was meche'd, tho!

David R., Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

Email from a former teammate (high school ball, Koufax, Mack, random travel teams):

Dude, do you remember we played against J.J. Putz from the Mariners when he played for Trenton! We made fun of him because of his name and he looked like a giant gomer. I have the scorebook in front of me, we won 6-5 and he hit two doubles. He didn't pitch and I can't tell where he played in the field, the positions weren't written down for Trenton. You played center and hit leadoff and went 1 for 2 with a triple, two walks, a strikeout and a groundout. Why were you hitting leadoff? I was in left of course and went 2 for 3 with two singles. I wonder if we played against him when we played other Trenton teams other years. He's really good. I thought from our area it was the Besco brothers who were supposed to be Major League stars. I wonder what happened to them, didn't they play for UM?

I have no recollection of this game.

Andy K, Friday, 13 July 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

But I do have a recollection of last night's game and it makes my head hurt.

Andy K, Friday, 13 July 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

Head feels fine now.

From USS Mariner:

In responding to the ridiculous assertion by Marlins president David Samson that Ichiro’s contract was “the end of the world as we know it”, Bavasi said this:

“My mother always taught me that if the only thing you have to say is, ‘(Expletive) Dave Samson,’ then don’t say anything at all,” Bavasi said Thursday. “So I’m not going to say anything at all. Is my mother the greatest or what?”

Andy K, Saturday, 14 July 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

wow respect for bavasi just went up up up

jergïns, Saturday, 14 July 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

That is a boat-load of awsome!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 14 July 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

That is amazing. God bless you, Bill Bavasi.

polyphonic, Saturday, 14 July 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

(Paraphrasing from last night's TV broadcast, assuming it was... Niehaus?) (Haren shown on the mound, graphic displayed of Haren's stats against AL West teams): "Dan Haren... on the DL against the AL West...... ah, the other Dan Haren... the kid in Victoria..."

Andy K, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I was explaining Jeff Weaver to my son, ending with "He's not too good" JUST before Weaver served up a soft shell to Ellis. My son said, "Haheh -- BOOM!"

Andy K, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

lol

niehaus is getting a little senile but he's still a great announcer. i hope they get him into the hall while he can still remember it.

jergïns, Friday, 27 July 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

Adam Jones is finally getting called up. Hey, Jose Guillen is a dick:

...here's a non party-line quote from Jose Guillen, who pulled me aside tonight and told me he's absolutely "pissed off'' about the Jones promotion.

"I just hope they understand this is not Triple-A,'' he told me, in a conversation you can hear on this audio file. "This is the big leagues.''

"I guess they have something to do but this is a totally different league,'' he continued. "I understand he's a good prospect and if they think that he's ready, then hey we'll see.

"He's going to have to come here and prove that to us. Because this team has been good with what we have and I don't think that's what we need."

jergïns, Friday, 3 August 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

It's official: McLaren and Bavasi back for 2008
