The good news to come out of this stretch of intrasquad games is that the Mariners managed to finish at .500. While finishing with as many wins as losses isn't any great shakes, remember that the Mariners lost 95 games a year ago, and 101 games the year before that. So .500 looks to me like a sign of improvement, a sign of progress. Eric Wedge has talked about how he wants 2012 to be the year that the young players get comfortable after gaining experience in 2011, and it seems like they're well on their way.

Last year, he was playing through a labrum strain. Don't know the excuse for 2010, though.

his BABIP in '09 was .356, was .314 in '10, and was .215 last season(!!!) either good luck followed by increasingly bad luck or a deterioration of his skills to the point that when he makes contact, he's hitting weak grounders or pop-ups.

last year his line drive percentage was 4% below his career average, his ground ball percentage was 7% above his career average and his infield fly percentage was 8& above his career average, so i think you're right, omar

Figgins started today because he had "numbers" against Niemann. Here's a number: .191, which is Figgins' average after his 0-for-3 so far.
