When the team was up for sale in 2004 nobody wanted it and it sold for about $450 million. Now the economy is in the shitter and everyone wants to pay 4 times as much for the team. What a country.

I wish Mark Zuckerberg had grown up in Flatbush with no parents under the care of a doting, now dead grandfather. He could buy the team and move them back to Brooklyn.

damn.. after reading that, well, I wouldn't say that my impression of McCourt was that he was an idiot, but after seeing those terms he negotiated with Selig, he clearly knows what he's doing.

the parking lot concession is huge. potential owners will pay a premium for those lots to have frank (and his lawyers) out of their lives for good.

this is an interesting article from Heyman. turns out the Dodgers were finalists for Prince and had offered him something like 26/yr for 4 years with an opt out after. If the opt out wasnt exercised he'd make about 20/yr for the next 3. Ned is basically a tard but the Dodgers front office has been very creative with contracts since he's been around. AJ Ellis is quietly putting up a great start to the season. I love stories like this - 30 year old out of options catcher gets the full time gig (sorta by default) and puts up a .900 OPS in April. Dude has unreal strike zone judgment.

Mark Ellis now on the DL.. 3/4ths of the Dodger infield and most of the bench were on the Albuquerque Isotopes last season..

Mark Ellis really got creamed at 2nd on that play.

Ellis almost lost his fucking leg because of it! He got some crazy procedure they give to car crash victims and he'll be in the hospital for a couple more days and is a shoe in for the 60 day DL..

Norichika Aoki was called safe at first base to start the sixth inning, as Tichenor ruled that first baseman James Loney was off the bag when fielding a throw by pitcher Aaron Harang. Replays indicated Loney's foot was on the base.

Loney protested. So did Mattingly.

"We have a pretty good view of it," Mattingly said. "He's on the bag and we know it. We asked (Tichenor) to get help. He wouldn't do that."

Later in the inning, Aoki scored on a single by Aramis Ramirez, who'd homered in the fourth, and Ryan Braun scored on Rickie Weeks' sacrifice fly, increasing the Brewers' lead to 3-1.

Loney questioned why Tichenor didn't seek help from fellow crew members.

"We knew he missed the call right away," Loney said. "I didn't have to go see the replay. The confusing part, I think, to a lot of people would be, why wouldn't you ask for help? You're saying that's your call, but nobody's perfect."

Loney advocated wider use of replay review.

"The more times these calls happen, the more people will want technology involved to get it right," he said. "We've already started to do that with the home runs. . . . Get it right, whatever it takes."

He called for other changes in the way games are officiated, suggesting that the home plate umpire might not be in the best position to call balls and strikes.

"When you watch from center field, that's the best way to see balls and strikes," Loney said.

Asked if he wanted the game to be called by robots, Loney said, "We'll probably eventually get there. We could be within 50 years of that."

First four game sweep by the Dodgers in Philly since 1946!!! I love historical oddities like this.

It's surprising too, because there were a lot of bad Phillies teams during that time (especially in the 50's and 70's, when the Dodgers were really good).

I don't think he's good enough for the Hall even by sabermetric standards.

His career WAR is in the Keith Hernandez / Jim Edmonds range, but I think both of those guys were superior defenders.

23rd in doubles, 80th in runs, 83rd RBIs, 111th hits, 72nd steals, 153rd HRs. Kind of a cool resume.

I'd agree with that. Even in a climate more favourable to sabermetrics, my guess is that voters will still look for some pocket of dominance, if only for two or three seasons. Abreu was very, very good for a number of years, but he never had one mammoth year (highest WAR was 6.3--but he was higher that 5.0 seven straight seasons). Don't think I realized he had 50 doubles one year; also, eight straight seasons of 100+ walks, 11 straight of 96-123 runs.

Graig Nettles, Buddy Bell and Reggie Smith have a better case than Abreu, I think.

And if the PED logjam were to break within the next ten years, Abreu and many others fall out of the picture completely.
