two weeks pass...

from Kevin Goldstein's organizational rankings:

#29 Philadelphia Phillies

System At a Glance: Picking at the end of the first round and being constant buyers at the trade deadline has taken its toll. There are some arms here, but very little offense, and even less depth.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

Very little offense otm. 'Some arms here' huge challops, tho.

Mordy, Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

Also, him ranking Mets above Phillies for organizational rankings (and really anywhere besides the bottom 5) is the kind of challops that boggles the mind.

Mordy, Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

since you've famously combed the Mets' system with stopwatch and spray charts I'll accept your opinion.

I look forward to the ruin to come, perhaps as soon as this year.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

Take a look at the last few years of his rankings and tell me whether you put any stock in his analysis. Seriously.

Mordy, Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

lol, like I have time.

If you're using major-league success to "measure" his rankings "of the last few years," that seems foggy. Systems are in flux.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 March 2012 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not sure how you can better judge the accuracy of his ratings than through major-league success (both from prospects coming up to directly contribute, and leveraging them in trades). Otherwise you're just hoping that he knows something that you don't. His breakdown of the Phillies seems particularly suspect to me, and so even if I don't have the same fluency with other teams, it makes me question his accuracy. He also seems to have overrated Mets prospects over the last couple of years - I have no idea if that indicates a bias, or just the inherent arbitrariness to this kind of thing.

Obviously the Phillies aren't going to continue to go to the playoffs every year for the rest of MLB history (assuming MLB history doesn't end shortly), but I wouldn't hold out too much hope for a "ruin to come." These things are cyclical and even if the Phillies have raided their farming system to win now (and I don't completely buy that is what has happened), systems aren't impossible to restock. You need broad systemic organizational flaws (such as the kind the Mets have been dealing with) to really experience total ruin, and even then the Mets won an NL East title as recently as 2006. At least you aren't rooting for the Nationals!

Mordy, Sunday, 25 March 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

lol, like I have time.

you should make the time b4 you come storming into threads with sweeping ex-cathedra pronouncements. classic pound-on-the-table-cause-you-have-neither-law-nor-facts behavior.

that said ... the phils' farm system doesn't appear to have much offensive firepower in the wings. i don't know (and don't care) about the mets' farm system.

such as what? I started off just quoting Goldstein. "Ruin to come" is just part of my trolling your rapidly aging team, all season long.

Where are the prospect experts who DON'T think the Philths have scorched the system w/ all the recent trades? K.Law was on the BP podcast a few weeks ago, they seem to be in general agreement.

from crashburn alley

Overall, this trading season for the Phillies went about as well as they could have reasonably hoped. It would have been great to move Blanton, Pierre, and Wigginton, but there will still be time for that in August. Otherwise, the Phillies were able to clear some money off the books and lightly restock their mediocre Minor League system. The 2013 squad will need a new center fielder and a new third baseman and neither issue was addressed with their deadline deals, so it seems as if Amaro will address those via waivers in August, or via free agency and trades in the off-season. We saw the Phillies play the role of sellers for the first time since 2006 and it was certainly a weird experience, but they came out of it all right.

Mordy, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 19:54 (twelve years ago)

I think Philly did great in replenishing their farm.. but man this starting OF of Brown-Mayberry-Schierholtz is o_0

johnathan lee riche$ (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 20:16 (twelve years ago)

like i said a couple of years ago, their offense is now a wasteland right on schedule. i didn't see the mediocre pitching coming though.

omar little, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 22:25 (twelve years ago)

offenses age. i don't know why the phillies would dodge that bullet.

Mordy, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 22:31 (twelve years ago)

they had a terrible plan imo. yanks and bosox have aged as well, as have other teams, but the phils' attempt at emulating them was destined to fail i think. maybe dom brown is going to be an amazing hitter and help turn it around, though. we shall see.
