Welcome to the thread with the lowest number of posts on the board. Sit back and enjoy the Rockies scrapping to 80 wins with a creaking offence and several starting pictures so young they won't actually be born until after the ASB.

I read a theory today that the rockies acquired a bunch of fly ball pitchers so the other team would hit it over the heads of helton, scutaro and whatever old man combo sticks at 3rd.

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

It's a theory! Unless they hit them to Cuddyer, of course. Then we're screwed. Unless we're going for Cargo and Fowler on their own in the outfield which would probaly be about as effective - then we can have Helton & Cuddyer share the 1B side, Scutaro and Blake share 3B and Tulo can take the middle. Actually I rather like the sound of this.

Just finished watching Running on Empty for the first time ever. There's a snippet of a baseball game on the radio towards the end, and you can hear Moyer mentioned. The film came out in 1988.

clemenza, Sunday, 11 March 2012 04:20 (thirteen years ago)

hopefully not an indicator of what he's got left in the tank!!

omar little, Sunday, 11 March 2012 05:58 (thirteen years ago)

i want him to play til he's 50.

omar little, Sunday, 11 March 2012 05:58 (thirteen years ago)

@DKnobler
Jason Giambi on Moyer: "He threw a changeup at 60-something (mph). You don't think the ball can stay in the air that long."

Andy K, Sunday, 11 March 2012 23:10 (thirteen years ago)

@DKnobler
Mark McLemore was a Jamie Moyer teammate for 7 yrs. "He used to say, if I hit 82 (mph), tell me. It's too hard." Moyer yesterday: 79-81

Andy K, Monday, 12 March 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

Meanwhile, (Brandon) Wood enters what could be his offensive prime at age 27, with a better pedigree than all his third-base rivals combined and an incredibly short burst of success that I've decided to wildly overrate.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, Wood has totally tailed off as the opposing pitchers have got better. Ah well.

Mark C, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 13:49 (thirteen years ago)

mark c no longer has casey blake to kick around

mookieproof, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

hes a good dude. only problem is he cant look up because his neck is fucked.

wolves in our wounds (mayor jingleberries), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 23:17 (thirteen years ago)

@sportspickle
Not making this up: If Jamie Moyer had been on the inaugural 1993 Rockies team, he would have been the oldest pitcher in their rotation.

tremendous

Why all the "since 1918" crap? Is 1918 the new 1901?

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 April 2012 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

is it about the live ball era?

polyphonic, Monday, 2 April 2012 17:56 (thirteen years ago)

Some guy in the comments section had the same thought I did: will Moyer pitch to Vizquel this year? The Jays and Rockies don't play, though. Their combined 94+ years surely would have been a record.

clemenza, Monday, 2 April 2012 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

were there lots of 50-yo pitchers in the Deadball Era? I doubt it.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 April 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

yes, that wd seem to be a record, but not by that much:

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 April 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

@StoneLarry
Amazing comeback from Tommy John surgery by Jamie Moyer. FYI, Moyer pitched 4 seasons while Tommy John was still active.

Andy K, Monday, 2 April 2012 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

Anyone want to talk about anything Rockies related that isn't Moyer?

Oh.

Mark C, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 13:38 (thirteen years ago)

I suppose I could give an update in case anyone's interested. The Rockies 25-man is now set, albeit temporarily, as they're going with 3 starting pitchers for opening day (Guthrie, Nicasio, Chacin - Moyer will join after a game and Pomeranz will slot in after the 15th), which allows players of deep interest such as Johnny Herrera, Eric Young Jr, Josh Outman and Tyler Chatwood to make the squad.

Tyler Colvin has made it in as 4th outfielder and tied for most ST homers with nominated backup catcher Wilin Rosario. Jordan Pacheco and Chris Nelson will share 3B duties.

Oh god I've just realised how mediocre this team is going to be.

Mark C, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 13:43 (thirteen years ago)

"players of deep interest" is a great euphemism

ciderpress, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 13:54 (thirteen years ago)

The final ST outings from all four of our initial starting rotation have been bad to really bad.

Mark C, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 10:20 (thirteen years ago)

I don't understand--what does any of this have to do with Jamie Moyer?

clemenza, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 13:42 (thirteen years ago)

heres an interesting fact from tweeter

Jamie Moyer pitched more than 500 @MLB innings before today’s opponent – Madison Bumgarner – was born in 1989. #MoyerFact

The four man rotation experiment will be interesting.

also, Tulo out 8 weeks

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 21 June 2012 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

really would like to know the what 'plan' is in the front office in colorado.. trading Ubaldo is a good move in hindsight but the other recent moves have been sideways at best.

johnathan lee riche$ (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

The Hammel/Guthrie trade seemed like a good idea at the time

polyphonic, Thursday, 21 June 2012 17:09 (thirteen years ago)

The "plan" has been made public - a bridging year in 2012 for the young pitchers and the strong prospects (Arenado, Rutledge maybe) to season, and a real effort in 2013-15 with Tulo and Cargo at their peak.

That things haven't worked out is predominantly bad luck - the current (weird, probably wrong) 4-man rotation contains none of the 5 starters at opening day. Our hitting is top 6 in the majors (our fielding, though, is weirdly crap, and probably the biggest legitimate disappointment).

I was fine with Hammel for Guthrie (I thought Lindstrom as well was verging on an overpay, but not a big deal). Hammel's performance this year has been so far off the charts that no-one could be b lamed for not predicting it; Guthrie was more of a risk in a sense, but even so a 7 ERA is way, way worse than anyone expected. So yeah, hasn't exactly worked out, but that's baseball, not bad decision-making.

I know it's defeatist, but I am kind of happy that things have gone so badly to shit, because now there's no need to make efforts to win now. The 4-man thing is probably a hiding to nothing (though we do have a very good bullpen, somehow) but if it protects/helps development - and I'm not convinced yet that it does - then fuck it, give it a go.

Mark C, Friday, 22 June 2012 09:59 (thirteen years ago)

Have you guys seen this? I am, in this season of shit, actually pretty excited to see what happens.

"If we get into the postseason," O'Dowd says of a club currently 14 games out of first place, "you might be shocked by what we do."

yeah I look forward to never seeing what you might do in the post season

johnathan lee riche$ (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

from Matthew Kory of BP:

"The Rockies blew leads of seven runs (early) and one run (late) before winning in the 11th. They could have blown more leads but blowing a seven-run lead takes time."

i was wondering if jamie moyer was an active member of the cubs roster during the baseball game ferris bueller went to, but it looks like it was a game from 1985 (he debuted in 1986.) however his MLB debut was 5 days after the movie was actually released so it was close.
