If I were Bryan LaHair, I'd decline.

Andy K, Sunday, 1 July 2012 18:07 (twelve years ago) link

Final Vote candidates:

American League
P Jonathan Broxton, KC
P Yu Darvish, TEX
P Ernesto Frieri, LAA
P Jason Hammel, BAL
P Jake Peavy, CWS

National League
OF Michael Bourn, ATL
3B David Freese, STL
OF Bryce Harper, WAS
2B Aaron Hill, ARI
3B Chipper Jones, ATL

sort of weird that the AL is all pitchers and the NL has none.

hard to take it seriously when both teams have 15 relievers and half of them suck

fuck this game having an impact on canon baseball

stop getting mad about the all-star game

J0rdan S., Monday, 2 July 2012 03:50 (twelve years ago) link

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH

Yeah, it's not worth getting angry about All-Star selections. Panda over Wright is wrong, but Wright still got picked so who really cares if he's the starter or not. If Trout hadn't gotten picked somehow then there would be something to get angry about.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 2 July 2012 10:34 (twelve years ago) link

like if the players and coaches decided that the rookie wasn't listed on the ballot and should "wait his turn", that would probably be a reason to get angry

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 2 July 2012 10:36 (twelve years ago) link

the World Series thing is the sore point. It's not a serious connection.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 July 2012 10:57 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, who cares if Panda plays innings 1-4 instead of 5-9? Panda's OPS is right there with Freese. He wasn't a terrible choice.

VERY IMPORTANT

@Dejan Kovacevic
Andrew McCutchen complained last night on Twitter that, while four members of the Giants were flown to the All-Star Game by private jet, the Pirates had him in coach on a commercial flight, and his layover in Minneapolis was extended by a delay. Five thoughts: 1. There's no nonstop to Kansas City from here. 2. Should have gone United through O'Hare. 3. First class isn't always an option with a late booking. 4. The Pirates travel like ROYALTY all season long. 5. It's not like he was on Southwest.

American League starter Justin Verlander is expected to work the first two innings, according to pitching coach Mike Maddux. After that, manager Ron Washington and Maddux are planning to use these seven pitchers for one inning each (in order): The Rays' David Price, the Rangers' Matt Harrison, the Angels' Jered Weaver, the White Sox's Chris Sale, the Athletics' Ryan Cook, the Orioles' Jim Johnson and the Rays' Fernando Rodney.

On the other side, following Matt Cain, the tentative rotation mapped out by NL manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan is the Nationals' Gio Gonzalez, the Nationals' Stephen Strasburg, the Phillies Cole Hamels, the Mets' R.A. Dickey, the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw, the Cardinals' Lance Lynn and then, in the ninth, probably a combo of the Reds' Aroldis Chapman and the Braves' Craig Kimbrel.

The reason for Dickey's late entry: La Russa wants to bring him in when he changes catchers. That way, Carlos Ruiz, who will replace Buster Posey, can warm up Dickey in the bullpen and get a feel for his knuckleball.

Among the pitchers who probably will not see action tonight if each team sticks to its current plans: Jake Peavy (White Sox), Yu Darvish (Rangers), Felix Hernandez (Mariners), Chris Perez (Indians), CC Sabathia (Yankees), Joel Hanrahan (Pirates), Wade Miley (Diamondbacks, Jonathan Papelbon (Phillies) and Huston Street (Padres).

Tony La Russa, speaking to the media after the game:

"(The Giants have) a really solid team. And you know, they have to be good, because they’re carrying Theriot.

(no one laughs)

So … that was supposed to make you laugh."

one month passes...

So basically Bud Selig's nightmare scenario is that San Fran makes it to the World Series, with home advantage because of Melky's theatrics on aspirin, with the Melkman having an incredible postseason perfectly clean but with all manner of USA Today and z grade blogger handwringing.

johnny crunch, Saturday, 18 August 2012 02:22 (twelve years ago) link

Add one more thing to the nightmare scenario: reigning batting champion Melky Cabrera.

clemenza, Saturday, 18 August 2012 02:31 (twelve years ago) link

Luckily he can't win

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Saturday, 18 August 2012 03:02 (twelve years ago) link

He probably won't, but he's definitely eligible--if you fall short of the 502 plate appearances required, but would still win if you counted the missing PA as outs (which in Cabrera's case would only be one extra out), you win. If McCutchen tails off and Votto doesn't come back and come back strong, Cabrera would win.

clemenza, Saturday, 18 August 2012 03:12 (twelve years ago) link

I think MLB has to grant the extra ABs as outs.. It's not automatic, but I could be wrong. If he had an ankle injury he might be better positioned to be pushed through as champ.

sanskrit, Sunday, 19 August 2012 03:35 (twelve years ago) link

Good question. I've been looking around and can't find anything that suggests it's not automatic, but it sounds reasonable that the league might want to cover itself that way. I thought the rule had something to do with Ted Williams, but apparently it only goes back as far as Tony Gwynn in '96:
