Rolling Hank Steinbrenner Can't Keep His Mouth Shut Thread

Already this seems late to the party, what with Hank's measured response to A-Rod's opt-out, but I have a feeling the (50 year old) boy wonder is just getting started. Record all examples of idiocy, dickishness, hollow bluster, childish petulance, and cartoonish super-villainy.

HS on the Yanks' offer to Rivera: “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that it’s a tremendous offer for a 38-year-old relief pitcher,” Steinbrenner said. “He’ll be, by $4 million, the highest-paid relief pitcher in baseball, by far. I don’t know what the holdup is. The ball’s in their court.”

G00blar, Friday, 16 November 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

I was just gonna post that as evidence of Hank's general idiocy (what can it help to even tempt annoying the pitcher you're trying to re-sign?), but apparently it actually has fucked things up:

But Rivera, who turns 38 on Nov. 29, has instructed his agents to shop him, in part because he was angered by Hank Steinbrenner referring to his age in recent comments about the Yankees' offer, a source says. link

This thread is going to get LOOOOOOOOONG.

''They were fair offers,'' Steinbrenner said. ''But there's no question, within reason -- because you can't be an idiot -- we're going to make very generous offers.''

"We want to win the World Series every year. We're not stupid enough to think we can do it."

I had to look to find this one, it was from the news conference after they hired Girardi.

I know we missed a lot of good stuff recently, particularly Hank's near-tampering with the Santana trade talks, but I'm quite fond of this unnecessary dig:

To tell you the truth, toward the end, Minnesota negotiated in good faith,'' Steinbrenner said. ''They really did. I have no problem with them.

"Red Sox Nation?" What a bunch of (expletive) that is," he said in an interview with The New York Times' Play magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans.

"Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order."

"Baseball's not as complicated as football, so I don't know that a manager means as much in baseball as he does in other sports, but Girardi is a great leader,"

mizzell, Friday, 29 February 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

"Nobody's going to be as patient with young pitchers as me," Steinbrenner said. "I don't care if they have 10 bad starts in a row, which they won't, but I don't care if they do. I know what they can do. We all know what they can do. It just takes patience. You don't throw them to the sharks, otherwise their arms fall off."

"Everybody that knows sports knows football is tailor-made for performance-enhancing drugs. I don't know how they managed to skate by. It irritates me. Don't tell me it's not more prevalent. The number in football is at least twice as many. Look at the speed and size of those players."

Haven't done more than skim the NY Times PLAY Mag profile of the Brothers, but Hal has sort of a sighing Wes Anderson-sibling-vibe in his relation to Hank (I didn't know Hal was 11 years Hank's junior and calls his father George).

"I want him as a starter and so does everyone else, including him, and that is what we are working toward and we need him there now. There is no question about it, you don't have a guy with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball and keep him as a setup guy. You just don't do that. You have to be an idiot to do that."

"The mistake was already made last year switching him to the bullpen out of panic or whatever. I had no say in it last year and I wouldn't have allowed it. That was done last year, so now we have to catch up. It has to be done on a schedule so we don't rush him."

"I think once Hughes and Kennedy get plenty of starts and get Joba back, and with Wang and Pettitte, we will be fine."

Mussina "just needs to learn how to pitch like Jamie Moyer."

"The starting rotation is not what I would have chosen at the beginning of the year, but that is not a big news flash to anyone."

Dr Morbius, Monday, 21 April 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

He's really amazingly stupid.

I'll let someone else quote Moyer's lines from the last few years for cheap LOLs.

I love the line about turning around the team "by force", as if it's some kind of warlike fantasy, i.e. improving the Yankees and stopping Iran's nuclear program: we'll use force if we have to.

"My only message is simple. The National League needs to join the 21st century. They need to grow up and join the 21st century.

"Am I pissed about it? Yes. I've got my pitchers running the bases, and one of them gets hurt. He's going to be out. I don't like that, and it's about time they address it. That was a rule from the 1800s."

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

Mets' broadcast team laid into that pretty well last night.

Let's change all the remaining rules made up in the 1800s.

Andy K, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

Does Hank have a writing team?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 14:07 (seventeen years ago)

If so, they shd get back to polishing those According to Jim scripts.

David R., Tuesday, 17 June 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

if so, they should be getting an award of some sort! that's some classic shit there!

Hank Steinbrenner blames injuries for the New York Yankees' slide from contention.
--
"I think it's very simple, we've been devastated by injuries. No team I've ever seen in baseball has been decimated like this. It would kill any team," Steinbrenner said. "Imagine the Red Sox without (Josh) Beckett and (Jon) Lester. Pitching is 70 percent of the game. Wang won 19 games two straight years. Chamberlain became the most dominating pitcher in baseball. You can't lose two guys like that."

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 08:57 (seventeen years ago)

He's right, and he's a douche! Win win!

David R., Wednesday, 13 August 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

Hank Steinbrenner is 70 percent half-mentally impaired.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

Morbs, don't you know that the offense (beset by millstones in CF & C, & lackluster performances @ 2B & SS) isn't the problem?

David R., Wednesday, 13 August 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

i can think of two divisions in another league where the yanks would still be in real contention
