Coming soon to a tv or computer monitor near you.

Just wanted a thread where I could post this tidbit from Crashburn Alley: 81% of the Phillies payroll is going to players 32 and older.

i would have thought it higher than that!

mlb is still blacking out local games via their mlb app right? I just got an ipad and my gf would more than appreciate me being able to watch the games on it rather than the goddamn tv.

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:09 (twelve years ago)

I think so. I would sign up in a heartbeat if it weren't for stupid blackout rules.

Dr. Alfred P. Falfa (WilliamC), Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)

yeah, i hate that so much. really screws people over who don't have tvs.

Z S, Wednesday, 6 February 2013 20:44 (twelve years ago)

They could at least tighten up the zones. The idea that I'm going to jump in the car and drive 250 miles, losing an extra hour crossing time zones, because the Braves game is blacked out is really stoooopid.

The FOX broadcast network will air 24 Major League Baseball telecast windows during the 2013 regular season, the network announced Tuesday. The schedule includes eight straight weeks of baseball in primetime (May 25 to July 13), marking the second straight year the network has aired such an extensive primetime slate. FOX has adjusted the schedule to accommodate college football, going dark on August 31 — the first Saturday of the season — and airing games at 1 PM ET throughout September. 2013 is the final year of the current MLB TV deals; starting in 2014, FOX will air 12 telecast windows per year.

would probably take under on the Nats and over on the Cards

frogbs, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 19:30 (twelve years ago)

I would take the under on the Dodgers and the Astros.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 19:33 (twelve years ago)

over on cards seems too obvious, am i missing something that made them a lot worse?

have to look at rosters for the padres and mariners this year but they both seem like the type of team that could unexpectedly overperform

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 19:36 (twelve years ago)

ok mariners are still shitty

over on padres and marlins. under on pirates.

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

pretty brutal for the astros when vegas is using 102 1/2 losses as a baseline

mookieproof, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 19:46 (twelve years ago)

over on the A's too, they won 94 games last year and the Astros got added to their division.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 19:52 (twelve years ago)

but it's hard to win 94 games, so you're not often gonna set the mark there.

w/ non-contenders I don't understand such bets, cuz you never know who's gonna be on the roster in Aug/Sept.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 19:59 (twelve years ago)

Since Votto debuted, there have been more than twice as many no-hitters as Joey Votto pop-ups. Since 2009, there have been two (or three) more perfect games than Joey Votto pop-ups.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 21:42 (twelve years ago)

I know the Astros are awful but hitting the over if they go 60-102 seems awfully generous. A straight 0.0 WAR team wins 45-46 games if I recall correctly.

frogbs, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 21:46 (twelve years ago)

well they won 55 games last year, are perhaps worse now on paper, and are moving to a much harder division

mookieproof, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 21:53 (twelve years ago)

the entire astros team is formerly-well-regarded-prospect types, there's definitely a scenario where they end up going .500

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 21:53 (twelve years ago)

Andy K, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 23:25 (eleven years ago)

Can't recall ever seeing a catcher block a runner from crossing the plate on a home run.

Quick, somebody get a urine sample from Carlos Gomez.

Dude went bug-eyed on Paul Maholm for no apparent reason, started a near-brawl.

BP's daily podcasters have been discussing for a week if a player could be ejected midplay, so they apparently went nuts when it happened befrore Gomez crossed the plate.

Miss Arlington twirls for the Coal Heavers (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 26 September 2013 01:13 (eleven years ago)

I like the ump's solution in this case: call McCann for interference on the basepath, award Gomez the base, don't make him go back out on the field to touch it. He looked like he would have just ripped the plate out of the ground and make somebody eat it, anyway.

How was Brian McCann not ejected for that????

Evan R, Thursday, 26 September 2013 17:14 (eleven years ago)

because even the umpire was like "that was kinda badass"

Z S, Thursday, 26 September 2013 17:15 (eleven years ago)

ha, fair.

Also: Aramis Ramirez injured his knee in the mele and is probably out for the rest of the season. It has been that kind of a year.

Evan R, Thursday, 26 September 2013 17:16 (eleven years ago)

How was Brian McCann not ejected for that????

Because Brian McCann is MLB Trot Sheriff.

Andy K, Thursday, 26 September 2013 17:20 (eleven years ago)

Hope McCann gets drilled repeatedly for that.

― Z S, Thursday, September 26, 2013 10:36 AM (3 hours ago)

Uh... Blocking home plate on a HR? Yeah no, that's one of the most butthurt reactions I've ever seen, and I'm disappointed Gomez didn't have a chance to lay him out.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 26 September 2013 20:55 (eleven years ago)

iirc mccann had more of a reason to block home plate than the fact that there was a HR

Z S, Thursday, 26 September 2013 20:59 (eleven years ago)

if gomez would have laid him out he would have:

- hit a HR
- admired his HR for a long time
- stared at Maholm
- flipped the bat
- yelled at Maholm on the way up the first base line
- yelled back and forth with freddie freeman, who was protecting the pitcher from the asshole running around the bases
- yelled at the 3B
- yelled at Maholm again
- destroy the catcher on the way to the plate

why's he so mad? because he got hit in the leg in June by Maholm.

Z S, Thursday, 26 September 2013 21:05 (eleven years ago)

perhaps he should have taken a detour over to the stands to steal a little kid's glove and heave it into the bullpen

Z S, Thursday, 26 September 2013 21:05 (eleven years ago)

Gomez suspended, McCann not even ejected. Baseball.

Evan R, Thursday, 26 September 2013 21:25 (eleven years ago)

Wonder what other things a catcher can do mid-trot without fearing a penalty.

Andy K, Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:09 (eleven years ago)

I think the mccann move was totally baller but he def shoulda been (at the least) kicked out.

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:22 (eleven years ago)

From David Schoenfield's "Five Important Issues for the Next Commish":

2. To DH or Not to DH: This ridiculousness has gone on too long. You simply can't have one sport with two leagues playing under different rules.

Why not? Baseball's still here, and the DH has been around for 40 years. Schoenfield's solution is to get rid of the DH. Does one league significantly and consistently outdraw the other? (Tried to look this up and couldn't.) I haven't noticed an uprising among fans from either league, or maybe I missed it.

clemenza, Thursday, 26 September 2013 23:10 (eleven years ago)

McCann has been the only Brave I like for years, but I think the greater incidence of "baller moves" in other team sports is why I fucking loathe them with the fire of a hundred suns.

I know it's not the regular season anymore, but we don't have a Dumbass Media 2013 thread.

Has anybody else noticed really bad audio mixes in baseball broadcasting lately? It seems like nobody knows how to mic the announcers for audibility anymore. They're so muffled in comparison to the ambient stadium/crowd noise, and it seems like something that started really suddenly, like six weeks or so ago. It seems to be at every network -- TBS, MLB, ESPN, WGN, the Braves booth. I thought it was just a Braves thing at first, since I first noticed it @Cubs and thought "eh, old facilities, hard to soundproof broadcast booths, whaddaya gonna do." But then it seemed to spread to other broadcasts. Am I imagining this?
