I predict that participation in this thread will be pretty sparse.
Will Kevin Towers successfully resurrect the career of Jim Edmonds? Mark Prior? Shawn Estes? Why pay Tony Clark when Adrian Gonzalez never needs a day off or a defensive replacement?
Will the Padres' assemblage of "baseball geniuses" (Towers, DePodesta, Alderson, Fuson, et al.) somehow turn a shitty roster into a team that can compete with the thoroughly superior rosters of the Dodgers, Rockies and Diamondbacks? Or will they inevitably finish in 4th place?
How many times will they wear those awful camo uniforms?
Will Callix Crabbe make the team? He has such a cool name.
So many questions ...

One downside to the awesome Padres/Astros game last night was listening to Orestes Destrades and Candy Maldonado in the booth. They were really, really bad.
― polyphonic, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)
ugh. orestes destrade IS terrible on the stick, that handsome devil.
..and, yes; up w/ callix crabbe!

Last night basically answered this question for me. Tony Clark roolz.

fun fact: his full name is Gentleman Ballplayer Tony Clark

Poly, why did Bard start yesterday? Barrett's still #1 right?
― Leee, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 22:46 (seventeen years ago)
Was Barrett ever #1?
― David R., Wednesday, 2 April 2008 02:05 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, Bard is definitely the #1.
We win again!

that's twice as many as Baltimore's 2nd game attendance

The Padres dugout is playing with and taping together the disembodied head of a taxidermied ram that cam out of somebody's locker for good luck.

Top of the 21st. franchise-tying record.
I wonder if they will enforce this: MLB rules prohibit an inning from starting after 12:59am.
― felicity, Friday, 18 April 2008 07:50 (seventeen years ago)
Not only is it the first time I've been able to watch baseball after getting up in the morning, but it's the first time it's made me late for work. The one inning I missed? The one where we scored.
― Mark C, Friday, 18 April 2008 10:06 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, suffice to say that I didn't expect to be following a baseball game while eating my lunch today.

Fell asleep during the bottom of the 20th.
― Andy K, Friday, 18 April 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)
Everyone looked sleepy. Khalil Greene made a throwing error to first and the run scored. Then Bud Black let Glendon Rousch bat for himself to make the final out. I think everyone just wanted to go home and sleep.
― felicity, Friday, 18 April 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)
doesnt Khalil Greene always look sleepy?
I was scoreboard-watching at Shea when this game was in the 6th and just hoped my game would end before that one. It did.

I like when the local announcers just stop caring at all what comes out of their mouths or goes on camera during the extra innings.
I think Tony Clark went gray sometime in the 19th.

― johnny crunch, Friday, 16 May 2008 16:32 (seventeen years ago)
He is legitimately the fifth-best option the Padres have right now at SP. It's sad, but he's actually pitched pretty well this year in AAA (better than anyone else on that team, for sure) and in his two MLB appearances. And there's really no reason to start the service time for any of the guys in AA. If he can give 150 innings of 4.5 ERA, at least it'll keep the bullpen relatively healthy.

I don't see what that has to do with Estes, but yeah, the Padres offense sucks.
― polyphonic, Friday, 16 May 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)
I mean, they've proved very capable of losing no matter who's pitching.
― polyphonic, Friday, 16 May 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

"Khalil Greene is 28 years old and appears to be a harder-to-spell version of Kevin Elster."
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)
still think they might finish ahead of the Rockies.
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 May 2008 13:51 (seventeen years ago)
Especially if they ever call up Headley. Dude is raking in AAA. With Kouz, Gonzalez and Giles, that makes for the beginnings of an offense.
Man, Ledezma looked great yesterday. That might wind up being one of Towers' best moves ever if Ledezma can find a way to pitch like that regularly. He might be the Padres' second best pitcher in two or three years.
I will consider third place this season a huge victory after the horrors of April and May, despite the weaknesses of the competition.
― polyphonic, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)
jeeeez @ CY:
"Young has a small crack in his skull and doctors have to wait for it to heal in order to avoid an infection in his brain, according to Padres manager Bud Black in the San Diego Union-Tribune."

That's the problem. He occasionally shows flashes of excellence and then tends to slide off the rails within two-three appearances. He has been given only one shot at starting regularly. It didn't go well (it was in '05), but I think he could develop into a decent number four or five starter. He has always seemed kinda awkward out of the bullpen, like he would benefit from knowing precisely when he will pitch.
― Andy K, Saturday, 31 May 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

The Rockies freaking clobbered the Reds this weekend. They piled up hits left and right. If it wasn't for some good defensive plays by the Reds, the Rockies would have also put up a dozen runs on Saturday.
I think if Colorado's starting pitching can hold out over the next two or three weeks, they might have a shot at making things interesting. They got off to a horrible start at the plate, but as they are hitting now like the best lineup in the NL. Their schedule in the next month includes series with the Pirates, Nationals, Padres, Reds (again), Giants and direct against LA and Arizona. The only club that they have coming up that is doing well is a four game series with the Marlins.

Perrotto, BP:
The Padres are expected to significantly cut their payroll from this year's Opening Day salary total of $74 million, as owner John Moores is going through a messy divorce that has even caused conflict when it comes to who has the right to sit in the owner's box at Petco Park.
:o
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, that was the story when Giles didn't get through waivers, and the divorce has loomed large on the horizon for awhile now. They may have to sell the team or just hand it to the daughter at this point.
