Barring a last-minute reversal, the Cubs will not trade for Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts before Opening Day, according to major-league sources.

The teams, unable to reach an agreement on the players that the Orioles would receive, have had only limited discussions in recent days, sources say.

The Cubs, however, have not been told that a deal is off, and a revival of the discussions remains possible.

well, the o's just made a move to get the roster below 40 men and roberts was scratched from today's linuep, but who knows? i'd still guess something happens. payton and cash for cedeno? i dunno.

no, but it's that or nothing at this point. it's funny, though, b/c when loewen was drafted, folks were surprised that the o's weren't going to use him as a position player, whereas there was also suprise that markakis was being used in the field as opposed to being made a starting pitcher.
