is a pretty far cry from this

but maybe this

will ease the pain.

Haha ouch. Still good deal by all accounts. That's a lot of upside for two years of Bedard.

two weeks pass...

wow, so troy patton may have a torn labrum. the notion that the tejada trade was a matter of my damaged goods for yours is gaining creedence.

patton, done. loewen? sore. dios mio.

cubs for roberts offer is now allegedly gallagher, veal, ceda and cedeno plus maybe marquis and cash if the cubbies will take jay payton, too.

random factoid: rocky cherry's mom was a dallas cowboys cheerleader...merry cherry. for real.

MAKE THE GODDAMN TRADE ANGELOS

David R., Friday, 14 March 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

Looking unlikely...

Barring a last-minute reversal, the Cubs will not trade for Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts before Opening Day, according to major-league sources.

The teams, unable to reach an agreement on the players that the Orioles would receive, have had only limited discussions in recent days, sources say.

The Cubs, however, have not been told that a deal is off, and a revival of the discussions remains possible.

mattbot, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

well, the o's just made a move to get the roster below 40 men and roberts was scratched from today's linuep, but who knows? i'd still guess something happens. payton and cash for cedeno? i dunno.

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

ANGELOS YOU FUCKING SYPHLITIC HOMONCULUS EAT A BAG OF GUNS

David R., Tuesday, 25 March 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

:D

David R., Tuesday, 25 March 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I don't buy Rosenthal's column. He says nothing definitive and leaves himself an out if the trade happens, which is what every journalist has said about this trade since the beginning of man.

I am hearing that Roberts hurt his back?

mattbot, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

of course, this is what they say now! i dunno. it seems to me, that there's too many options for the o's to get younge and cheaper for them to not cut bait on some dudes sooner rather than later.

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

re: roberts back per the o's beat guy

Brian Roberts said he's had some tightness in his lower back for about a week and decided to do something about it before Opening Day. He doesn't sound concerned.

Roberts offered to make the Viera trip on Thursday, but Trembley didn't think a long bus ride was a good idea. Roberts might take some swings in a simulated game in Fort Lauderdale.

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

MacFail

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Baltimore president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail told reporters in Ft. Lauderdale Wednesday that a Brian Roberts deal with the Cubs is off the table.

"We worked at it this long and we don't have deal," MacPhail said. "There's other sides characterizing it as an impasse. You make the judgment."

I dunno, if you can't take Jim Hendry to the cleaners then you probably aren't trying Jeff Loria. Double lols that it's his old boss.

mattbot, Thursday, 27 March 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

i think he sort of outfoxed himself on this one, though he seems to be all about one for five deals.

j.q higgins, Thursday, 27 March 2008 12:50 (seventeen years ago)

btw...does hendry have a bit of a thing for middle infielders, or what?

j.q higgins, Thursday, 27 March 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

so, at this late date, there are plenty of tix left for opening day. thinking of playing hookie on monday and heading up to charm city.

Best offseason move they've made!

David R., Sunday, 30 March 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

well, no...but a very good one!

j.q higgins, Sunday, 30 March 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

biggest news to come out of yesterday's game:

BALTIMORE, March 31 -- Orioles designated hitter Aubrey Huff paid the price for an insulting comment he made regarding the city of Baltimore during an offseason radio appearance, drawing boos before all four of his at-bats during his team's season opener at Camden Yards on Monday.

"It's around par for what I figured," said Huff, who finished 1-for-4 in a 6-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. "Like I said earlier, it was a mistake to go on and say the things that I said, but again, I'm human and I made a mistake. If I was a fan, I'd probably be the same way, have a few beers and boo me too."

Fans jeered Huff as he walked down an orange carpet during pregame introductions and continued to voice their ire in the bottom of the ninth inning, when he came to the plate with two outs and represented the Orioles' final hope.

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

break 'em up. o's on the verge of a 4 game sweep of the mariners, running their win streak to 5.

j.q higgins, Monday, 7 April 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

5-1 doggs get psyched

69, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)

Scott Templeton needs to write a piece about how "trading Bedard & Tejada" is the new "letting A-Rod walk."

David R., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

actually, templeton has a source inside the warehouse that's told him the current success of the team was all part of the master plan. hgh was planted on tejada, palmeiro and horseface gibbons.

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

4-0 in the 6th. This team cannot be stopped.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

Man, if they trade Brian Roberts, they might go undefeated!

David R., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

Key questions: will Daniel Cabrera ever figure out WTF he's doing out on the mound? Will he do it in a different location? And if the O's cut bait on him, will they be awarded a retroactive World Series championship?

David R., Tuesday, 8 April 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

daniel cabrera is fucked.

6 straight! what a nice vacation from reality.

is anybody going to adam jones tee night tomorrow? i think i'm jumping on the whiskey train from dc after work.

j.q higgins, Monday, 14 April 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

I hope that t-shirt was consolation for last night's pitching.

Lamp, Thursday, 17 April 2008 01:25 (seventeen years ago)

NOTHING was consolation for tuesday's pitching. trachsel and aquino in the same night? god...i wanted to claw my eyes out.

the adam jones hr was a nice touch, though.

j.q higgins, Thursday, 17 April 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)

how often does this happen?

"By the 10th inning, the Orioles (9-7) had run out of bench players and were forced to move Mora to shortstop and Huff to third. They no longer had a designated hitter, so the pitcher would have batted."

stupid 13 man bullpen.

j.q higgins, Friday, 18 April 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

adam jones has some kinda hand speed...

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Friday, 18 April 2008 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

stupid 13 man bullpen

If only the O's had a starter that could average 6 innings. I wish I had watched last night's game since the headline today is "Trashcel can carry Orioles to rare sweep".

Lamp, Sunday, 20 April 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

re: trax

he actually pitched damn well in that yanks finale.

re: not trax

how about that daniel cabrera? certainly not a paragon of consistency, but...

20.2IP 16H 5ER 5BB 12K ERA: 2.17 WHIP: 1.01

over his last three starts.

j.q higgins, Thursday, 24 April 2008 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

Andy K, Monday, 28 April 2008 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

STILL...i hear you.

best thing i've read in a while (from the sun's o's blog):

"Don’t be in a rush to leave the ballpark after a win. Stay around long enough to check out the video that the Orioles recorded during the last homestand – with Kevin Millar and teammates lip-syncing the Orioles Magic song. It’s priceless.

Millar is shown on an empty field at the beginning, mouthing the words to the opening line. Then he turns toward the dugout, where Sherrill, Adam Jones, Jeremy Guthrie, Dennis Sarfate and Adam Loewen are leaning against the railing wearing foam No. 1 fingers on their hands, moving them in rhythmically to the music. Later, we see Jones “playing” the drums and Loewen on the keyboard."

...but, then, i haven't seen a win yet this year!

j.q higgins, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

Was it the Manny catch? I wanted to see that.

Player TEAM W L ERA G GS CG IP
1. M Albers BAL 2 1 2.15 15 2 0 29.1
2. B Burres BAL 4 4 3.47 9 8 0 49.1

4. J Guthrie BAL 2 4 3.86 10 10 0 63.0
5. S Trachsel BAL 2 4 6.75 7 7 0 32.0

5th best ERA in the AL?!?! Of course three of the four teams ahead of us are in the NL East as well. I've only been watching sporadically but O's pitching hasn't seemed that good to me this year.

Lamp, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 01:05 (seventeen years ago)

o's beat the yanks 12-2, chase mussina afte 2/3 an innings, latroy hawkins gets tossed for throwing at luke scott, adam jones drives in 4, daniel cabrera throws his 8th straight quality start (w/ NO walks, i might add)...what follows is a summary of baseball tonight's sory on the game:

From ESPNews at 10:42, the O's-Yanks' recap:

First highlight: A-Rod walking!

Second highlight: Jetes gets hit! O noes!!11!1!11!!

Third highlight: Scott gets thrown at. Understandable, you see...

Fourth highlight: A-Rod homerun! Yeah!

Fifth highlight: Jeter saying yes, his hand does indeed hurt. Glad we got that cleared up.

Fade to box, a quick mention that the Yankees lost, nothing on the O's.

That's it, ladies and gentlemen. Not a single mention of the Orioles' offense or video of a single Orioles at-bat, aside from Luke Scott doing the limbo unexpectedly.

classic.

j.q higgins, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 03:04 (seventeen years ago)

(I mean, good game, O's!)

why would you mock brian roberts? you aren't one of those people that didn't want to trade for him b/c "theriot is WAY better" are you? the first game was pretty fun, but this has, on the whole, been a pretty ugly series. just be thankful the o's cut traxie or things would have gotten REAL ugly.

no, but it's that or nothing at this point. it's funny, though, b/c when loewen was drafted, folks were surprised that the o's weren't going to use him as a position player, whereas there was also suprise that markakis was being used in the field as opposed to being made a starting pitcher.
