"At approximately 12:20 a.m. [PT] on Dec. 30, 2007, Spiezio is accused of leaving a bar in Newport Beach after spending the evening drinking several vodka drinks. He is accused of getting into his 2004 BMW and attempting to drive home while under the influence of alcohol. Spiezio is accused of speeding, cutting across several lanes, crossing through the oncoming traffic lanes, driving over a curb, and crashing into a fence. The crash knocked down a fence pole and blew out the front two tires of the car. Spiezio is accused of getting out of the car and fleeing the scene on foot.
"The defendant is accused of running to his Irvine condominium complex and going to a friend's condo, who lived in the same complex. While his friend attempted to clean up the defendant, Spiezio is accused of vomiting in his friend's room. When the friend made a comment about the vomit, Spiezio is accused of becoming angry and attacking his friend, punching him repeatedly and throwing him against a wall."

Cubs fans are screaming about pitching luck yet again. It's amusing to watch them--hell, anyone really--get worked up into a lather over Todd Wellemeyer.

― Andy K, Thursday, 10 April 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)
Let the record show that I was bullish on Renteria coming east due to the price of the contract, and I spent about 1000 posts on the 2005 Red Sox thread bitching about ER's tendency to wilt against pitching from the superior league (to hstencil's obvious delight). Anything contrary to that said by me was obviously a typo. :D
That said, if the Cards had their current pitching staff 5-7 years ago, they'd be desigining WS rings right now. In the past.
― David R., Thursday, 10 April 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)
the starting pitching will come back to earth.
good things about them: brian barton looks like he could be a legit leadoff guy. reyes getting some bite back on his fastball.
the bad: pujols protection still iffy, TLR likes Izturis, all the white dudes in the outfield will K a lot.
― bnw, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)
Whither Colby Rasmus? Are they delaying his arb clock, like the D-Rays are doing with Longoria? Or is Willie Schumacher the new Stubby Clapp (i.e. a paragon of gumption and guile)?
― David R., Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)
yes on the clock and Colby isn't exactly tearing it up at aaa. Lolarussa <3s Skip a little too much, he seems to at least takes walks which is something hustlin' Eck never did.
― bnw, Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)
The hustle Eck puts into one walk, however, has to at least equal the lack of effort a base-clogging slugger puts into four free passes.
― David R., Thursday, 10 April 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)
he hustles on ground outs too. that may not show up in your moneyball stats but it counts for something, and that something is heart.

If you mean he's going to OD on Jolt, Red Bull, & guarana and suffer 3 consecutive strokes during the 2010 season, then I agree 110%.

There was a moment in today's game ... Geovany Soto hit a double, and the score read 3-0. Then about five seconds later the score read 6-0, and then it read 3-0 again. My housemate said, "in the future, Fontenot is going to hit a 3-run homer," and then Fontenot hit a 3-run homer. I guess the score ticker was a few seconds ahead of the video footage for a second. I've never seen that before.

is there a walking in runs with the bases loaded stat? cuz we are kicking ass at that. lost in the lynching of mike parisi will be the fact that glaus and ludwick left like 14 on base between them.
big picture: albert looked good, wellemeyer looked good, and the team consistently puts up a good fight.

Having nearly every called third strike contested and ejecting Thames and Polanco in back-to-back games -- maybe something was a little off with that umpiring crew.
The Tigers' staff must be up there with bases loaded walks too.

Sheehan in BP:
The Cardinals were left for dead just last week, but thanks to Albert Pujols' ridiculous hot streak—he's hitting .455/.533/.935 since August 15, and has delivered a 1284 OPS in September—they've managed to stay in the race. Pujols has hit homers in three straight games as the Cards cut the Brewers' lead to 3½ games since Saturday, a fact that has largely gone unnoticed in the race to make Carlos Delgado—a player not half as valuable as Pujols—an MVP candidate. Adam Wainwright's return has given them a rotation anchor, and they've won all four of his starts since he came back August 22. It is another top-heavy roster in St. Louis, and they have some of the same bullpen issues that the Brewers do, but they also have the best player in baseball and are just three back in the loss column. A soft schedule—five games with the Cubs and 13 against sub-.500 teams—can't hurt them.

I guess he's sort of mortal after all. Man, if he would go on another month long tear while Holliday and Lujo continue to kickass, we might be able to put the Cubs away for good before September.
Also - Wellemeyer should have been traded away for 8 boxes of Reese's Pieces and a $50 savings bond. Fuck that guy.
