Shawn Green - Blue Jay, Dodger and Met, hangs them up.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 3 March 2008 05:07 (seventeen years ago)

Damn, this means that players who are my age or younger will start retiring soon and then I'll be all depressed and shit.

He could have easily hung on for a few more years as a 4th outfielder, but I guess it's his own bad luck that there isn't a good fit for him right now on any west coast teams ...

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 3 March 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

seems to be alot of outfield vetrens who are sol this season. Sosa, Stewart, Crisp, Lofton, Nixon - think it has a lot to to with the deluge of young outfielders coming into the bigs in '07 & '08.

I don't think you got a good look at him last year... Done.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 March 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

More to the point, does this make Kevin Youkilis the greatest living Jewish athlete?

Active, I mean, not living.

There has been some talk on some of the Cinci baseball boards that the Reds might invite Lofton to spring training. Considering that the Reds have a boodle of outfielders and two starters that cannot field, I cannot understand why other than the fact that it is "Dusty" suggestion.

Crisp will get traded, the guy can play for some clubs, he just lost his job to Ellsbury in Boston.

So does Shawn Green's sudden drop off in power production mean he might have been on the juice or the fact that he might have had a somewhat normal career arc? I'd probably bet on the latter even though there is no way to prove it either way. Even though he was a Dodger, I kind of liked him as a player.

The Reds just picked up Corey Patterson.

I was thinking the same thing -- he was an afterthought (and was injured, no?) for the Mets down the stretch -- but his season stats were surprisingly decent!

Ryan Braun?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

Dusty's got his Lou Brock back at the top of the order. Can't wait to see how long he blocks Jay Bruce in CF.

mattbot, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

Cinci also invited Jerry Hairston to camp.

Blech...

earlnash, Thursday, 6 March 2008 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

damn, he's 56 years old!

chicago kevin, Thursday, 6 March 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

I kept thinking that very same thing back when Hairston first got with the Cubs a few years ago. I was like is that guy is still playing, not realizing it is the guy's son as they didn't usually have a Jr. at the end.

The Dad had a heck of a 70s fro though.

Brad Ausmus? Mike Lieberthal? Jason Marquis?

jaymc, Monday, 10 March 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

i was surprised that jerry hairston original was only 56! and that he played until 1989!

chicago kevin, Monday, 10 March 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Brad (No Hit) Ausmus is not as good a Jewish athlete as some snooker players on the Upper West Side.
