Confused Kenny Rogers and Kevin Brown momentarily.

Probably Moises Alou?

I think it's probably Gonzalez. Alou was really hurt by health and poor fielding. Rogers (despite having a case maybe on par with Morris minus post-season success) was solid but never that great a pitcher. Durham was a solid ballplayer too but not much more and Nomo only had one amazing year.

If Kevin Brown was on this list he'd destroy everyone.

Not saying that he deserves to be in the HOF btw but Kevin Brown actually has a legit case for being the best pitcher in the NL for a five year period. No one else on this list can make anything like that kind of claim.

kenny rogers was really good but never as dominant as brown, no

I was figuring the top three would be Gonzalez/Alou/Durham in that order wrt to wins over replacement, but actually according to BBR Gonzalez and Rogers are in a dead heat w/a WAR around 52.

alou is around 40, Durham 33.

yeah id have to go luis gonzalez but ive got a lot of love for alou, v professional hitter

johnny crunch, Thursday, 9 January 2014 02:42 (twelve years ago)

I was pretty psyched when alou came to the cubs but he had a couple of average seasons and i was so sickened by the end of the cubs' 2003 season I didn't even notice when he ripped off his epic 2004 campaign.

fuck Kenny Rogers (1999)

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 January 2014 03:37 (twelve years ago)

I'll go with Alou as the best player. Gonazalez had a better career, I suppose, I'm just less convinced his peak-era numbers were real (and I'll cut Alou some slack for the injuries).

clemenza, Thursday, 9 January 2014 04:57 (twelve years ago)

only one of these players pissed on his hands to toughen them up

mookieproof, Thursday, 9 January 2014 05:24 (twelve years ago)

Luis Gonzalez probably has the best stat line and he was a solid player for a long time, but you can trust those numbers he put up in Arizona about as much as a politician.

I'd probably also go with Moises Alou myself. He was a heck of a hitter all the way to the end of his career.

earlnash, Thursday, 9 January 2014 06:54 (twelve years ago)

I always liked Alou.

Old lefties never die they just move to the back of the bullpen and become loogies.

earlnash, Thursday, 9 January 2014 22:08 (twelve years ago)

Ray Durham was pretty solid. Going through those mid-late 90s White Sox teams, they had a pretty good lineup but they were pretty weak on the starting pitching. Of course the ERA's of pitchers were through the roof at that point. You look on the 99' White Sox and you got two starters that had over 20 starts and an ERA over 6 and two starters with over 30 starts an ERA over 5...yikes it's pretty much softball.

earlnash, Thursday, 9 January 2014 22:14 (twelve years ago)

Immediately thought of lugo but I remember him better than alou for some reason, WAR aside
