Above It All: Which MLB Players Are Smooooooooooth?

On the field, Khalil Greene stands out by what he doesn't wear: his emotions. He is blank-faced after home runs and strikeouts. Whether he makes an error or a defensive gem, his blue eyes give little clue to his emotional state.

Greene's understated exterior makes him a throwback to the 1940s and 1950s, when stoicism was the norm.

--"What's the Deal, Khalil?," Tom Krasovic, [i]San Diego Union-Tribune[i] (April 11, 2006)

Which other MLB players play with Khalil's poker-faced nonchalance?

Do you agree it is MAD SMOOOOOOOOOTH?

Matt Williams

Matt Williams is a total redass!

David R., Monday, 7 April 2008 12:41 (seventeen years ago)

Banned from this thread:

1) Any player that's imitated Babe Ruth
2) Any player that looks like Babe Ruth
3) Any player that can stick a whole baseball in their mouth
4) Babe Ruth

David R., Monday, 7 April 2008 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

So? He can be both.

The type of thing I mean is when Matt Williams homered or did something good he would put his head down and run the bases. No "yay, me" fistpumpery or heaventhanking.

Basically, lack of showboating/mustard. It does sound very 40s, back when baseball was Serious Business.

Who else plays/played in this deadpan style? Mark Grace?

LA fan-fave JD Drew!

In his book Three Nights in August, Buzz Bissinger mentions St. Louis manager Tony La Russa's agony over Drew's lack of passion.

A+++

I respected J.D. Drew before but he is suddenly one of my new favorite players.

The guy is android smooth -- rejuvenates himself in a hyperbaric chamber, doesn't say boo to anyone, strikes out with the same elan with which he homers. I hope he hits 20+ HRs this year (with lots of RBIs for the Triple Crown hoi polloi) and shuts up all his critics (hi dere LA Times).

David R., Monday, 7 April 2008 13:32 (seventeen years ago)

Given TLR's reaction to Drew, I guess his ED meds kicked in every time Eckstein hustled to first after a walk.

^^this

xp yeah, like ketamine-smooth

too right on the moose.

how about monsieur erik? has anyone ever seen that guy do a postgame news conference? his french canadian-ness and superdry sense of humor confounds the american sporting press.

j.q higgins, Monday, 7 April 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

Gagne?

felicity, Monday, 7 April 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

What tickled me about Matt Williams was his occasional display of enthusiasm when playing defense.

In a very tense inning in one of the 2001 WS games (maybe 7) a routine grounder came bouncing at him. His face showed nothing but he pounded his mitt right before scooping it, as if to say, "Oh boy, the ball's coming to me. I'm gonna get the ball."

felicity, Monday, 7 April 2008 14:07 (seventeen years ago)

oh, ha! forgot about gagne. i meant bedard.

j.q higgins, Monday, 7 April 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

cue deeznuts to tell me "It's ERIC Gagne, asshole." :/

i wouldn't exactly call him smooooth or emotionless, but no matter what he does at the plate, varitek pretty much runs to the dugout and puts his catching gear back on.

mookieproof, Monday, 7 April 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

These deadpan guys would make a good calendar.

Every month is January.

felicity, Monday, 7 April 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

Erik has a french accent?!

he doesn't really, but he spoke only french until fairly late in life (junior high, maybe?). he definitely doesn't speak english as it's his first language and i suppose that somewhat accoutns for his reticence when it comes to talking to the press.

his name is actually pronounced w/ accents over the "i" in erik and the "e" in bedard (air-EEK BAY-dard, i guess).

j.q higgins, Monday, 7 April 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

he's obviously related to air-EEK REE-pair

gabbneb, Monday, 7 April 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

jd drew isnt smooth so much as he is autistic

mussina is a type A style douchebag, there is nothing smooth about that guy

bedard is too but he tries to overcompensate by playing the i-dont-give-a-shit game w/ the press

deeznuts, Monday, 7 April 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

jd drew isnt smooth so much as he is autistic

nuthurt?

David R., Monday, 7 April 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

if Moose instantly pissed off an award-winning douchebag like Michael Kay, he's my kind of d'bag.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 7 April 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

It's Éric Bédard (ay-RICK BAY-dar). sorry, i was just bothered by this whole Erik and ay-reek business

francisF, Monday, 7 April 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

oh sorry, it is Erik. ah well, that's what i get for being Mr. Pedant.
