Sadly, in honor of Ronny Cedeno's bases-clearing double against former Red run-giver Phil Dumatrait. Also: Luis Rivas?!?!?

I realize several catchers are using the new gear, but given the color scheme, Ronny Paulino's get-up is particularly Holideck Lazertag.

leading the majors in Runs Created: NATE McLOUTH!

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

is McLouth for real? what's BP say about his performance and ability to keep it up?

Steve Shasta, Friday, 18 April 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

they've got pills for that now shasta.

chicago kevin, Friday, 18 April 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

The 'Rates could be okay but their defense is just dreadful.

My dog could play better first base.

felicity, Monday, 21 April 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

With some training, I can imagine a lot of good dog outfielders. That said I think batting would pose a serious issue for all but the most talented.

Alex in SF, Monday, 21 April 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

With some training, I can imagine a lot of good dog outfielders.

even if they had to run the ball in from the outfield i'll bet they could outrace a johnny damon throw.

chicago kevin, Monday, 21 April 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

Here's where I scouted a mini Australian sheepdog that was a pretty decent contact hitter

felicity, Monday, 21 April 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

"Well Billy this here is a five tool sheepdog. Now now I know you are going to look at those power #s right there and say there is no way a dog like this hits 30 homers in a ballpark like ours, but let me tell you buddy the power will come. And the speed is just off the charts. Vince Coleman was a 20 on the scale compared to this little ball o' fur. And she's a great clubhouse presence. Really loves everybody and for a biscuit, she'll lay down in the corner and just stay for a whole inning. Can get a little excited and pee on the pitcher's mound sometimes, but hey no player is perfect, right?"

Alex in SF, Monday, 21 April 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

"Can get a little excited and pee on the pitcher's mound sometimes"

Put a Milo on him.

felicity, Monday, 21 April 2008 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

BP projects McLouth as a .274-.280 EqA guy, so no they don't expect him to bat .380 all year. I had no idea he'd had 800 AB in the majors already.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 21 April 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

three months pass...

Frank (Las Vegas): Nate, Can the Pirates (with white flag flying) trade for decent pitching prospects without giving up what may be baseball's most productive outfield? or should they just wait for Nady and Bay to hit free agency and take the supplemental picks? Thanks, Frank

Nate Silver: To fail to trade Xavier Nady would be the mistake of the century. This is a career year being had by a C+ ballplayer, and to continue to get lumped in with Jason Bay in all these discussions is inflating his brand.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

at least they can't trade him for matt morris

How many times can these shitstains say PERFECT ffs?

(shitstains = Arizona announcers, fwiw -- Extra Innings doesn't have the PIT feed)

David R., Wednesday, 6 August 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

xpost

Yes, almost always. Why this time?

Coupled w/ Marte's implosion the other day, this is very enjoyable. [edit: STILL enjoyable]

(Karstens threw six shutout innings against the Cubs last week.)

Andy K, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

oh well

mookieproof, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

See the post you x-ed, Andy. Also, some dopey comment about Karstens being a true Pirate for "taking what's not his" (hey fuckball if he's PERFECT through 7+ then it's his to take) and also laying into Karstens for not going to 3rd on the looping fly ball to short RF.

David R., Wednesday, 6 August 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

and also laying into Karstens for not going to 3rd on the looping fly ball to short RF.

Maybe he still has the voice of Hank Steinbrenner ("DON'T PULL A WANG!!!!1!!") in his head.

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Virgil Vasquez gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings, and Dave Davidson was charged with a blown save as a collection of the Pirates' top prospects lost to Manatee Community College, 6-4, at McKechnie Field in Bradenton.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Friday, 3 April 2009 05:15 (sixteen years ago)

mook, don't you have the heart to start a new-season thread?

Matt (Boston): McLouth had a good season last year, but with McCutchen coming strong, wouldn't it make sense to try and move him sometime this year? The Bucs aren't challenging anyone this year, so why pay McLouth when he (probably) maxed out last year and isn't a star? A good field prospect and arm isn't too much to expect is it?

SportsNation Keith Law: I would have moved him this winter; he was awful defensively and didn't do much with the stick after Memorial Day. That three-year extension could look pretty bad if he picks up where he left off.

Mike (Pittsburgh): Why so much hate for Nate McLouth? I know he does not cover the most ground, but awful defensively? He won the Gold glove, at 5 assists, 1 DP, an only 1 error in 1300 innings in CF! And another thing, it was his first year as an every day starter! Isn't it normal to see a dip late in the season for guys who are not use to playing that many games? I know he has never been seen as having a ton of potential by scouts, but its nice to see a guy work hard and overachieve his potential rather than all the duds who are tabbed as the next great thing.

SportsNation Keith Law: He's awful defensively. Just accept it and move on with your life.
