In beloved homage to one of ILX's perennial clubhouse presences, please list your first-hand encounters with baseball personalities.
One rule: The encounters must be YOUR PERSONAL brushes with baseball fame. No hearsay.

I spent 30 seconds talking to ILBB's own Felicity a long time ago! Very nice and personable, but can't deploy italics tags for shit.
― David R., Wednesday, 9 April 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)
My actual closest brush is that I might've gotten some sort of MLB-sanctioned contagious disease when I spent a week @ a Houston Astros training camp in Florida when I was 10ish (w/ the comm college team my dad coached).
― David R., Wednesday, 9 April 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago)
in addition to aforementioned mocking, i used to run into george will frequently by my old office in georgetown. i presume he has an office near there or parties at the four seasons.

i think he might have a home near there

ILBB posters I have met:
mookieproof gr8080 (sort of) max Dr. Morbius gabbneb Shasta lauren Dave R Aaron W YGS bnw Mark C Hstencil r.I.p. remy bean
(Others?)
Dave is my 100 Bullets fiance (remember that?), but won't go to a ballgame.
Strange fiance.

I sorta remember that? Between this & the Huxtable thread revival, nostalgia's spooning me something serious.
BTW, don't feel too slighted -- I blow off Morbius and YGS, too. And hanging w/ YGS involves making $$$!
For what it's worth, I am totally willing to go gaming this year with any one of you suckers I mean beautiful people. For real. I'll even shower.
― David R., Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:07 (seventeen years ago)
Oh also Stormy Davis (sorry Stormy)
Xpost hanging with YGS cost me ten bucks one year on the Braves.
Anyone comes to LA gets to go to a game with me -- even an AL game.
― felicity, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:12 (seventeen years ago)
I saw pro blogger Alyssa Milano at the Troubadour one night at a Remy Zero show around the time of Charmed (1999?). She was with Shannen Doherty and Brian Austin Green. Alyssa's hair was in a kerchief, would not have recognized her had someone not pointed her out. All these actresses are tiny, the size of small children.
― felicity, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:21 (seventeen years ago)
I saw ILX wakeboarder Steve Shasta once at a Japanese RAWK concert. Also late lamented gygax! at the same concert, weird.

back when i was a kid/young teen i used to go to like every miami hurricanes' baseball game and my aunt kinda knew some people. i used to meet danny graves (lol) like in the bullpen or something when they'd play the marlins and i guess i've met dudes like pat burrell and jason michaels a few times but nothing really notable. most of the players that used recognize me (or my face at least) made it up to like A or AA and fizzled out.
um before he was in the bigs shannon stewart used to coach at a baseball camp that i played at when i was a kid-- i only have faint memories but i guess its kind of lore there that he coached and then went on to play in the majors. also a-rod showed up once to the same camp to watch his cousin or nephew or something like 3 or 4 years ago when i was an employee (working snack bar) but i only saw a glimpse of him as he went into his car. and in the summer placido polanco works out at the jcc that the camp is attached to.

Danny Graves was totally a dirtbag in Tiger Beat clothing.
― David R., Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)
Or Denny. Whichever one sucked.
One of my high school friends was married to Todd Hundley. I only met him once, at a bar around the corner from Wrigley after a Cubs game. He smoked like a complete pack of Marlboro's and told me his favorite guy to catch was "Woody."
xp Danny Graves is so cute! He reminds me of someone, can't think who.
― felicity, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)
Once in late 1993 or early 1994, I had an Upper Deck card of then-prospect Salomon Torres. He was signing at the mall or someplace, and my dad was going to take me from his office. But I lost the card -- probably at my dad's office -- and when we got to the mall, they told me he just left. And when I asked the mall guy if he'll ever come back again, he said he didn't know.

i should note that i never actually made it into the bullpen, but at pro player there are seats that go right up next to it so i would just go to the railing. i guess i was his groupie as an 8 year old (vividly remember him tearing his acl in teh cws while i was making an elementary school diorama-- total ;_;) so it was cool for him to like come say hi to me when i was 12, and i was so totally o_O when i found out his rep of like a total d-bag womanizer

ILBBers I have met in person: Rap0sa, Yance (RIP), Dan C, Maura, Dr. Morbs, Tim A (RIP). I think that's it but I am not sure.
-- As a nine-year-old Portland Mavericks fan, I was rejected for an autograph by then-manager Jim Bouton: "I don't do that." So basically he lies his ass off in Ball Four about loving fans and stuff.
-- Pro pitcher Jay Baller (Phillies, briefly), five or six years older than me, grew up two houses down, the only pro ballplayer ever to come from my town I think. His dad built a mound in his sideyard and he used to throw there all the time. We would watch and say "Hey, Jay!" because he was a huge star in our high school.

When I was 12, encouraged by my mom (from whom I got my Sox-fan genes), I sent a Bar Mitzvah invitation to Roger Clemens, who, I'm sorry to say, was someone I then characterized as 'my idol.' We sent it off nice and early because we figured he'd have a busy schedule (but not too busy--the thing was scheduled for October '92 lol). Some months later, but before the BM, I received an RSVP card, with the Rocket's autograph on it, and nothing else.
He didn't show up, but I still have the card!

Baseball players - zip that I can remember, but cricketing legend and one of the greatest bowlers of all time, Sir Richard Hadlee, stayed in my house once.
Oh, and I know it's not in the spirit of the thing, but my best mate was having dinner the other day with a colleague and her husband, and he apparently was a pitcher for the Yankees for a few years - he's only late 30s ish so it might have been quite recently. Name of Williams?

i once went down to florida w/ my dad on a business trip that coincided w/ an HS spring break. the closest training camp that made any logistical sense was dodgertown, which was cool b/c it's dodgertown and i thought i'd get to see eddie murray take some BP. we get there, and i kind of bolt inside while my old man's parking the car and i almost literally run into eddie murray. now, eddie murray was legendarily prickly about autographs, but asking for an autograph was the only thing i could think to say. by this time, a crowd of kids had gathered around, so there were plenty of pens, but when he asked me if i had something for him to sign, i had to pause for a moment and i dug around my pockets looking for anything...i found a business card from a real estate brokerage where i had used the bathroom earlier that day and presented it to him to sign. he gave me a sort of quizzical look, shook his head, signed and stalked off to the cages.

general sports suzification:
mickey m0randini, one of thirteen players ever to complete an unassisted triple play, worked out with my american legion team before his big-league tryout. i was playing first then and his throws nearly tore off my hand. he was a shortstop in high school and college but apparently didn't have the arm to play big league ss so they moved him to second.
with five seconds left in regulation of a 1989 pennsylvania high school class aa state basketball quarterfinal game, i took the only charge of my career against marc blucas. he fouled out and we won in overtime. he went on to play ball at wake forest and play love interest to buffy the vampire slayer, among other things. i went on to join ilx.

when i was 13 or 14 my dad and i flew with his boss in his boss's private plane to see the yanks beat the sox in fenway. waiting in the small airport afterwards, we saw pettitte (winning pitcher that night) and clemens check in (apparently to fly to texas to see clemens's son's little league game). this was 2000, i think, probably the height of my yankee fandom, and all i could say was "good game."
― max, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)
Haven't met any ILBBers, though I've met other ILXors. Maybe if the recession lets me go to NoCal in August I can meet some Bay Area-ites.
My mom's first husband's daughter (by a later marriage) married Jim Morrison (played 1977-88, mainly Phils, White Sox, Pirates). I interviewed him on an off day in 1986 or '87 for a newspaper feature piece, and I have a ball signed by him and the rest of the 1980 (I think) White Sox. He had 40 doubles that year, not a bad 2nd/3rd baseman.

i met buck o'neill when he came to speak at my school a few years back. very cool dude.
met fergie jenkins, lee smith and ron leflore raising $ for fergie's charity at hohokam park a few weeks back.
met bob feller signing autographs at a baseball card show many years back.
met many random o's at the old team shop in farragut square, dc. best was bill ripken, who i met after his signing duties. he was dressed in white slacks, white button down and white loafers...had clearly been up celebrating the night before!

Only ILB'er I've met is Aaron W -- used to work with him and I think I told him about this place. (In fact, I think I might've told Yanc3y about this place[!]. Never worked with him, though.)
Played against a handful of past and present major leaguers and with a handful of onetime minor leaguers, which I'm pretty sure I talked about in a thread about playing baseball.
Once stood beside Matt N0k3s as he signed stuff during my city's little league fundraiser. If getting stuff signed counts, there's a bunch.

ILBB: D4ve R. Yanc3y M4tt C. Tim Maura Morbs boldbury
I feel like I've told both these stories here, but:
- Running into Rickey Henderson on Boylston St the year he played for the Red Sox (2002 IIRC). Didn't even realize it was him until some girls walking in front of me squealed (!), asked for a pic. Direct quote: "Yeah, Rickey will take a picture with y'all!" - Dave Winfield telling an autograph-seeking 11ish-year-old me to fuck off outside a Syracuse Chiefs/Blue Jays exhibition
Mel Hall once, inexplicably, at a barbecue at an aunt's house. Current Tiger punching bag Jason Grilli's folks live a couple blocks from mine, but I've only ever met his dad, erstwhile Tiger punching bag Steve.

Winfield actually told you to fuck off!?
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 24 April 2008 03:10 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah - growing up in Syracuse I was a huge Jays fan. I guess this was '92 (since I think I did successfully get autographs from Gruber and Alomar, both serious favorites of mine back then) - I'm lined up with a bunch of other kids as the players are entering the stadium, and realizing who the old dude is, I pipe up, "Mr. Winfield! Mr. Winfield!"
Winfield turns and, completely unprovoked, snarls, "Fuck off, kid."
If he'd spit on me I could have sued Larry David for unpaid royalties. Totally killed the joy of the World Series.

I met Glendon Rusch last night after the Nightwatchman show at the El Rey. Nice guy! We chatted about Los Feliz ("Where is that?" he asked, being from Burbank), Kerry Wood's departure ("They need to go out and get Peavey. They'd have the best rotation in baseball") and the Cubs ("I root for them, too."). He was funny and self-effacing. He said he'd like to go back to the Rockies ("I don't need to worry about messing up my Hall of Fame Numbers") and will go to Spring Training (when I asked where, my boyfriend hissed "HE DOESN'T KNOW WHERE"). When I snapped a picture of him with my boyfriend I told him I had him on my fantasy team. (I think he was a useful lefty one year when we had Holds?)
Another friend mouthed "randy wolf" sotto voce and gestured somewhere but I did not see said Wolf.
