Jose Abreu and the 2014 White Sox

BP scout bite on Abreu:

“He’s a beast and for real. He may run into a few slumps as pitchers adjust, but he has excellent bat speed and some of the best raw power to come along in recent years. But he's not just a pure slugger. He knows how to control the bat and maintains very fluid actions with his wrists.”

What would you imagine Jose Abreu would fetch if he was put back on the market after the first month of the season? More than 68 million?
12:21 Dave Cameron: 168 million.
12:21 Dave Cameron: Probably over 8 or 9 years instead of 6, but he’d get way more.

This team seemed kind of boring at the beginning of the season but I'm into it now.

Viciedo: .348/.410/.528 with 11 doubles

Granted, as a defender, he's probably turned 11 singles into doubles.

exciting for Abreu and to see when Chris Sale's body will fly apart

Jose Abreu is just a bull, that guy has a hellacious uppercut swing not unlike Pujols or Sheffield to really drive the outside slow stuff. The fact the guy is already killing those kind of pitches the other way is pretty crazy as often your new player hot start is from people groovin' in the fastballs left and right then it dries up when they start going slow and away.

earlnash, Friday, 2 May 2014 02:51 (ten years ago) link

No shortstop better than Alexei Ramirez these days, says Hawk.

Andy K, Thursday, 8 May 2014 06:28 (ten years ago) link

The double play he made last night was pretty amazing.

Ventura must really not like his bullpen.

Los Angeles - Bottom of 8th
Chris Sale pitching for Chicago
E Aybar doubled to left
C Iannetta singled to center
C Cowgill grounded into fielder's choice to third
H Kendrick singled to right
M Trout homered to center
J Petricka relieved C Sale

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/93665050/anthony-castrovince-with-jose-abreu-future-of-white-sox-looking-good

Abreu this season has a 172 OPS+, which is a way of saying he's been 72-percent better than average. In the game's long history, just one other rookie who qualified for the batting title has posted an OPS+ of 170 or higher, and, no, it wasn't Mike Trout (168) in 2012.

It was Shoeless Joe Jackson (193), way back in 1911.

Mildly emo about Paulie's retirement. That 2005 World Series win (just after I moved to Chicago) was what got me back into baseball, and he's the last vestige of that team.

son of a lewd monk (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 September 2014 19:54 (ten years ago) link

I guess. The Sun-Times today came with a special supplement and poster.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 26 September 2014 20:04 (ten years ago) link

he played 16 seasons for the sox, was quite good as recently as two years ago, hit five homers on the way to the team's only title in the last 90+ years, ppl are understandably attached and they should be

the whole jeter thing has become insufferable because of media worship (and maybe he didn't do anything to puncture it, but i'm not sure he could have), but there are people like k3v who grew up with him and loved him and that's cool. and so it is with konerko. abreu was objectively a better player, but he didn't have the same impact on a community
