The Atlanta Braves - Ted Turner, tomahawk chop & lingering grudges from the 1992 World series. The Texas Rangers - fuck GWB.

Mariners (because of Bavasi) Giants (because of Sabean) White Sox (because of Hawk & AJ)
― David R., Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)
Oh - I forgot the Nationals - represents the death of the Expos and it's in mother fucking Washington (also has a GWB taint factor). i hope they stink forever!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)
how do the nats have a gwb taint factor?! that's rich coming from a fan of the harper-jays!
uh...whut?

D'Backs.
― mattbot, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)
you see jq, Washington is where he works - and they also let the monster throw out the first pitch a few years in a row now. i don't want to turn a ilbb thread into a political debate but whenever i think of the Nats the first thing that pops into my mind is that torture condoning-wmd-lying-invasion-botching-heckovajob-brownie-missile-shield-building-big-oil-cronie-should-be-impeached-and-in-jail-for-war-crimes-douche and his shit eating grin tossing out that first pitch in his fucking Nat's jacket that i only wish they'd flled with angry fire ants before giving to his silver-spoon'd ass. but i don't want to make this thing about politics.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)
also - Harper is universally loathed in toronto - probably more than anywhere else in Canada! Not sure what Harpo has to with with T./the J's really - Ottawa is the capitol and if they got a team i might hate on them too!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)
Diamondbacks (semi-imagine bitter rivalry w/ beloved Rockies). I also have a completely logic-free dislike of the LA teams.

-well, far be it for me to say who you should or shouldn't support as irrational dislike, to me, is a hug e part of sports fandom, but really, george w. bush has no real actual connection to the nationals. i'm sure i don't have to tell you that the president throwing out the first pitch is sort of a tradition and certainly soemthing ownership or the fans wouldn't have requested in this case. you heard the boos?
― j.q higgins, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)
the last time, yes - it was mixed i'd say. i watched the clip and was surprised at the amount of people who were still clapping/cheering over the boo's.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)
i'll go with the indians because the team nickname thing is kind of.... i dunno, call it a "celebration of native americans" if you want but we all know that's not what it is.
and the twins because i'm sick of that "little engine that could" bullshit.

Giants (Sabean and MacGowan) Dodgers (Coletti) Mets (no different than the Yankees at this point) Yankees (yogi flame for all time) Angels (annoying fans/players, except for Vlad) Cardinals (TLR) White Sox (Ozzie and Pierzynski)
― Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)
Giants Yankees Red Sox Angels
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)
Ha -- I would've list the Angels (if only for their play-by-play team dear god what tools) (also signing Sarge Jr. LOL), but my love of Vlad knows no bounds.
― David R., Wednesday, 9 April 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)
Giants, Yankees, Cards, pretty much.

Test case - I'm currently watching the Dodgers vs Diamondbacks game and I just don't know who I want to lose. I have a suspicion that if I didn't heart the Rockies I'd have a soft spot for the D'backs. Hmm.
― Mark C, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:32 (seventeen years ago)
You want the Dodgers to lose.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)
Morbs, do SABR afficianados generally look down on fantasy ball?
xp aw you're just bitter you lost Jeff Kent
― felicity, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)
You want to ignore embittered A's fans.
But you probably want the Dodgers to lose.
― David R., Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)
Oooh exciting pitcher on pitcher matchup. I don't mind LA losing to the Dbaxx. I love Brandon Webb and Upton.
― felicity, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)
Mark C when you watch the game, do you hear the announcer Vin Scully?

Probably.

― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)
Don't you think it is actually more helpful for the Roxx if LA and the D-backs beat each other up? I think AZ is the team to beat in the West.
― felicity, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)
Not as long as they are batting Chris Young at the top of their lineup. Seriously that is one dysfunctional offense.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)
I still think that team is much better than the Dodgers, so it would help the Rockies for the Dodgers to beat them.
― felicity, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)
If the Dodgers don't play Pierre or Garciappara much, I don't think this is true (but they might play Pierre a lot so ick.) Wild Card is obv. Justin Upton who if he plays out of his mind could be the best OF in the NL.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah I kind of hope Pierre and Nomar "wash their trucks" in the next couple months if you know what I mean.
If I check out the Jurassic Series in PHX this weekend (reptiles hosting the geological rock formation) I would root for the reptiles.

i thought famous wakeboarder steve shasta's favorite team was the giants? maybe i am confusing him with gygax!
yankees white sox (ozzie and harrelson) phillies (philadelphia) orioles (angelos) florida (loria) cardinals (tlr) texas & houston (texas)
― mookieproof, Thursday, 10 April 2008 03:07 (seventeen years ago)
I hate all teams that the Giants have ever lost to, but right now the Giants the most (LOL KEPT THE WRONG BARRY, SABES).
― Leee, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:58 (seventeen years ago)
Oh and whichever team Jeff Can't and AJ Onomatopoeia are on.
― Leee, Thursday, 10 April 2008 04:59 (seventeen years ago)
Yankees for the usual reasons. White Sox for Hawk. AJ and Ozzie are small potatoes compared to this bastard.
― craven, Friday, 11 April 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)
i hate the hawk as much as anyone and the fact that the chisox have chosen to feature him in their ads for season ticket packages, single game tickets, and the ads for television broadcasts are driving me crazy. i had his craggy mug staring back at me as i stood on the bus going down division today.
― chicago kevin, Friday, 11 April 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)
OTM w/Hawk. I have no animosity toward the White Sox but when I watch them on TV I find myself rooting against them because the worse they do, the fewer times we put it on the board.
― mattbot, Friday, 11 April 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)
I haven't noted any of the commentators' names, Felicity - I'll listen out for Vin Scully. Is he good?
(I feel like Tuomas on this board)
― Mark C, Friday, 11 April 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)
felicity, there's a wide range of opinions on fantasy among SABRen types. Plenty of them play. I just prefer to keep my limited baseball time focused on the actual races.
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 11 April 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)
Surprisingly little scorn for the regional Chicago announcers who explained just the other day that "OPS" was on base percentage plus slugging.
If only they had been around to explain pitch count in the Baker era.
Xp good for you Doc. I prefer Reality League myself.

lol i'm pretty sure there was a shot of jane fonda sleeping during a WS game once, but i dont remember that praying shit. sounds unlikely imo.
the rest of ur complaints pertain to canada, a second-class nation of reprobates and moose, and as such i have zero sympathy 4 u~

Orioles & Giants - franchises I loved as a kid that have been run into the ground and show no signs of getting better Rangers - fuck Tom Hicks Phillies/Pirates - I have something against the Rust Belt, and I still resent them for their godawful '70s/'80s uniforms

the Pirates unis were awesome in the '70's and '80's.

canada, a second-class nation of reprobates and moose
Replace "canada" with "Mets" and "moose" with... actually that's still cool, and this is my feelings re: NY Mets, my least favourite squadron.
I used to hate the Giants for things related to J.Kent, B.Bonds and UC Palo Alto but now I just feel kind of bad for them.
― Lamp, Sunday, 13 April 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)
Once upon a time I hated the Mets, but then they signed Pedro.
― milo z, Monday, 14 April 2008 03:12 (seventeen years ago)
Everything Thermo wrote about Jays-Braves is true, including the TV cameras focusing more on Jane Fonda's paeans to the heavens above than on the Blue Jays dugout. That said, I'm not going to complain about that stuff 16 YEARS LATER because we won, so NYAH NYAH.
I also don't believe in directly mixing politics and sports. If I'd been at the Nats' home opener, I would have given GWB a polite golf clap and kept my mouth shut. There are plenty of appropriate settings for voicing one's opposition to the govt, and a baseball game is not one of them. Similarly, protesting at rah-rah Chinese Olympic torch runs = good idea, but hissing at 14-year old Chinese gymnasts who probably haven't seen their parents since they were four years old and simply want to win badly (we all know that there will be incidents like this) = find a better target for your hostility.
Answering the thread question:
Dodgers (fuck LA) ChiSox Astros
sub-category of teams that I want to hate but can't really hate because I kind of feel sorry for them never winning and stuff:
Braves Phillies Cubs
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 14 April 2008 09:18 (seventeen years ago)
Braves
How can you feel sorry for a team that won their division every full season for a decade and a half (and even won a WS to boot)? Do you feel sorry for the Yankees for their seven-year drought, too? :p
― David R., Monday, 14 April 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)
The Yanks won four WS in five years and their fans are dickheads. The Braves were really good for a long time but never clicked in the playoffs, by the end of their run their fans were spoiled and didn't appreciate their team (i.e. poor attendance at 1st round playoff games) (I feel bad for the players in this instance), and they always had a bunch of individual players that I liked (Smoltz, Maddux, Chipper, Andruw).
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 14 April 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)
There are plenty of appropriate settings for voicing one's opposition to the govt,
ha ha, ok - if dubya is having townhall-style gathers where he listens to people concerns and thanks them for their input - this is not getting reported. if not - boo away i say!
would Mugabe get the polite golf clap? Tom Cruise? Stabby McGrabskids?
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 14 April 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)
All I'm saying is that booing at a baseball game is a dumb way to make a political statement. Anyone who thinks that booing GWB makes jack shit of difference to anything at all is kidding themselves. If I'm at a baseball game, I'm there to watch the game, I don't want to deal with that shit. Also, as jqh pointed out, presidents throwing out the first pitch is a traditional element of the sport, which is something that I respect. Now, if Selig decided to start a new baseball tradition involving African dictators then he'd be doing exactly what I'm trying to avoid -- politicizing the games themselves (although it probably wouldn't lower my opinion of Selig too much!). Anyway, I'd just stay home in that case.
