Yeah, it's lousy when you don't know what's happening and you don't know how to even find out. Some board ancients will remember September 11th, and some a little younger will remember the July 5th 2005 bombings, where we lost someone and we still didn't officially know until days after we all knew. It's probably good for calzino to be off the boards, but I'm not sure it'll be restful for him. (and I know, I know, it's not primarily for his benefit)
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 5 March 2026 08:53 (one week ago)
His behaviour isn’t as egregious as some who have been banned but if you haven’t noticed his posts veering wildly off course for a while now, seeming to never log off here and the increasing conspiracist slant to many of his posts, then you haven’t been paying attention.
I think it’s fair to suggest logging off if someone seems to be in a bad way. I don’t think it’s fair to suggest the board acts as an absorption pad for the the effects of the behaviour I mentioned above. I am not pathologising this, just mentioning what I have personally noticed.
― hat stays on (gyac), Thursday, 5 March 2026 09:39 (one week ago)
Yeah that's all fair - it's climate and weather. As usual though, the tipping point is attacking people who are trying to help - notably but not only yourself.
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 5 March 2026 12:52 (one week ago)
It was more the swearing at ppl who were pushing back on the posting. If he had logged off for a bit it wouldn't have been enforced but he didn't care, as he told me so.
― xyzzzz__, Thursday, 5 March 2026 15:22 (one week ago)
The post yearning for a return for Zoroastrianism was the worst, with a couple of others being v annoying, but times are bad what you gonna do.
― xyzzzz__, Thursday, 5 March 2026 15:27 (one week ago)
when calz swore at me (which was not infrequent) i fully understood tbh. but also i guess not everyone is gonna be fine with it. idk

― Hiphoptimus Rhyme (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 5 March 2026 15:55 (one week ago)
I don’t remotely care about swearing so much as I do the manic constant posting, the conspiracy theory stuff, the constant presence without seeming rest. The Ukraine thread was where I was like, this seems not great? Does nobody else see it?
The fact people get more upset over swearing than the stuff I described is honestly a bit depressing.
― hat stays on (gyac), Thursday, 5 March 2026 16:05 (one week ago)
I find the response to someone being banned a bit bemusing. Like as if it's a thing that happened by accident or was imposed upon us by one person, almost a tragedy, as opposed to a community of people flagging enough posts which they found fault with.
I don't know for sure, but I assume in this case, and in other cases, the person who got banned isn't particularly bothered. I argued with them as did others but I don't have any real ill will.
The post-mortem though seems a bit unnecessary, not least given the consequences are brief.
xpost
― LocalGarda, Thursday, 5 March 2026 16:08 (one week ago)
xp: tbh, I noticed it and was a little alarmed, but know that calz can get very screechy and make me feel stupid, so I tried my best to ignore it. Also, I'm not THAT up-to-date on world affairs, so when he's like "Zelenskyy is an imperialist warmonger," my best reaction was "I don't think that's the case, but what the fuck do I know?"
― peace, man, Thursday, 5 March 2026 16:14 (one week ago)
fwiw I didn't FP calz for swearing, it was because he has indeed been posting a lot of dubious crap. True, I didn't fp him until he started constantly belligerently defending his right to do so, but that was the underlying reason.
― obvious old hat (rob), Thursday, 5 March 2026 16:18 (one week ago)
And while I think minimizing this down to people objecting to "swearing" is absurd, I definitely don't enjoy having to witness posters start vicious spats while I'm trying to process depressing and wrenching real-world violence, so I can sympathize with anyone who wanted that to stop.
― obvious old hat (rob), Thursday, 5 March 2026 16:22 (one week ago)
Hardly minimizing. The poster has carried some things that can be argued from twitter on Ukraine and in ukpol threads, but people have a back and forth and its passed over.
Swearing and aggressiveness at a v bad point where everyone is on edge is a tip over point.

― Serfin' USA (sleeve), Thursday, 5 March 2026 16:43 (one week ago)
May regret weighing in but...
While not defending the aggression and excess posting, call not so subtly referenced his brother at least 3 or 4 times and I can't help but wonder if that played into his anxiety. I'm not going to go beyond that when he's not here to explain and I don't know what kind of relationship they have.
But being someone with OCD (and i believe others here have stated they have it, so i only speak for myself), flooding yourself with every morsel of information is often a fear response to assume a form of control, to be 'ahead' of the danger. And it tends to be a response that happens in times of duress.
Also, having been on the receiving end of it before, it doesn’t often feel good having your mental wellbeing brought into question into the middle of a thread, where everyone can read it. I was often humiliated when people did that to me and then I lashed out because of that embarrassment where I might have been more likely to change my behavior if someone had pulled me aside off-board. But I have no idea if calz can even respond to off-board messages or if anybody is in contact off-line with him.
But I am not trying to defend bad behavior by any means, just trying to humanize behavior from someone we all ostensibly care about. I do think flooding threads with unsourced data of dubious merit is not good behavior and is something that i generally have an adverse reaction to and I don't think his responses to that of "hey I'm just posting you can take or leave it" was helpful. Nor the hyper aggressive responses.
I'm hoping that he does return, that he does recognize this and apologize, and work on those things that were mentioned and that we can welcome back our calz. But maybe I'm a pollyanna

ok sure I agree with that, but idk maybe because I'm fairly sweary myself but I think it's much much more the aggressiveness than the bad words.
I should add that I have appreciated calzino's acerbic posting style over the years and definitely don't want him to depart ilx permanently, just backing gyac up on the noticeable shift in recent posts, which preceded the Iran war

I hadn't been in Ukraine thread so I hadn't noticed.
I do feel like this ordeal exposes my main issue with Twitter/BlueSky sites. Many have defended them by saying that you get news you wouldn't get from mainstream media from people much closer to what is happening. And yes, that often does happen when it's something like an Alex Pretti situation where there's full video of a shooting and it needs somewhere to go.
But there's just so much crap out there. People began relying on these sites more for advance tealeaf reading during the height of COVID and now use features like Trending or keyword searches and find voluminous tweet threads by people posting with confidence and authority who are often either distorting info for engagement farming or just outright talking out their ass.
So I get that with mainstream media being internally censored at increasing levels, people are rightfully looking for alternative media to fill that void. It exists but you don't generally need to be on YouTube, TikTok, BlueSky, or Twitter to read it.
I myself got taken in by unhinged COVID grifters in 2021 so it's hard to stop once you start, it's like eating your third bowl of chips despite your stomach aching
― Abby Gore (Neanderthal), Thursday, 5 March 2026 17:20 (one week ago)
"Many have defended them by saying that you get news you wouldn't get from mainstream media from people much closer to what is happening."
I just happened to put BBC Radio 4 on for my cat as I'm out for the evening and I got to hear the whole ringmarole of how "its so hard to verify info out of Iran, but google images show that the Iranian army building next to the girl's school was flattened" but what we get is a recording of an American govt spokesman denying it all with this shitty journo dancing around the obvious.
So what I am telling you is that there are many ways to lose your mind.
― xyzzzz__, Thursday, 5 March 2026 17:42 (one week ago)
To be clear I blame most of this not in social media itself but the Bezosification of mainstream media

the thing i say over and over again is that _i can't protect people from the consquences of their own actions_
yes the entire world is in a prolonged state of crisis and none of us individually have the ability to fix it, it fucking sucks. it sucks when people you care about are suffering and dying and a lot of people are suffering and dying right now. once we get to a point where we're actually able to heal rather than just survive a lot of shit is gonna hit and it's gonna hit hard. right now, well, when someone cares about dies, my reaction is just "that sucks, i liked them". it's the same principle when an ilx poster i feel sympathetic towards starts saying and doing fucked up shit and (rightly) gets banned for it.

Re: censorship. Whether that's what's happening or not isn't something I am going to spend a lot of energy on. However its happening there is a lack of information and analysis and I am going to go somewhere else to fill that gap. That means either knowing more or being taken in often or losing it eventually, or its already happened. Not saying its a great route.
