“Harper's agenda is disastrous for this country and for my generation,” DePape writes. “This country needs a Canadian version of an Arab spring, a flowering of popular movements that demonstrate that real power to change things lies not with Harper but in the hands of the people, when we act together in our streets, neighbourhoods and workplaces.”

Perhaps more important than poems for jihadis are dreams, which they believe can contain instructions from God or premonitions of the future. Both leaders and foot soldiers say they sometimes rely on nighttime visions for decision making.

In a survey earlier this month, for example, 55% of respondents in Mosul, Iraq, said that their life is better than it was a year-and-a-half ago; only 21% reported such improvement when asked in June 2015. Not that Mosul residents like IS -- only 39% considered the group to be representative of their views and interests. Yet that is much higher than the 10% figure recorded in June 2014. Moreover, while 57% would rather IS leave Mosul, 39% would opt for the group to stay.

The United States affords its citizens religious freedom and does not consider apostasy a crime, but Kerry chose the term to rubbish the militants' claims of piety.

“Daesh is in fact nothing more than a mixture of killers, of kidnappers, of criminals, of thugs, of adventurers, of smugglers and thieves,” he declared using the Arabic acronym for the ISIS group.

“And they are also above all apostates, people who have hijacked a great religion and lie about its real meaning and lie about its purpose and deceive people in order to fight for their purposes.”

Some Muslim legal scholars consider the proper punishment for turning one’s back on the faith to be death and several majority Islamic countries execute convicted apostates.
