sexual dimorphism of humans def means that a lot of sports are more exciting to watch when men are playing them but otoh a lot of women's sports are less commercialized and therefore less likely to suffer from rampant PED use endemic to men's sports and therefore likely to be more of a clean competition

Cool thing where you can go to like any place in Rome and walk through a coffee shop and get a euro cup of espresso that really hits. I associate this with being a Roman phenomenon near the various sights even though I’ve also been to other places in Italy? Coffee in Vienna is ok I think but really Turkish coffee (as also found in most of the Balkans) is the one. Went to some place in either Kyiv or St Petersburg where they served me a coffee that had hundreds and thousands (that’s “sprinkles” or “jimmies” to the rest of you), I don’t know what they thought they were doing with that and it didn’t really work. Do have to say the ease with which one can get an iced coffee very easily in US cities is a significant point in their favour.

I think people’s opinions regarding dark roast coffee are generally accurate, it seems stronger but actually isn’t iirc? I used to make this stuff at work that had the texture of silty tar purely because I liked the smell better and it gave me the worst heartburn. Made it once for someone I was meeting at work and they took one sip and didn’t even pretend to enjoy it, that ruled. Did its job though (keeping me awake).

The idea that American coffee could be better than Italian coffee is utter insanity. I've never had a bad coffee in Italy, compared with the bucketloads of dishwater I've had in the US. As for France, I don't mind their espressos, which are much longer than Italian espressos, but their milky coffee is undrinkable as they use UHT milk. Agree that Australian coffee is better than anything other than Italian.

Eh.. all coffee beans come from the same handful of places, and tastes are down to preference. Do you prefer it black? With sugar and/or milk? Light/dark? The main difference lies is in how the beans are roasted, how fresh they are, how they are prepared and then brewed. My issue with French coffee was their strong preference for dark roasts and their old fashioned brewing methods. There were two places in Paris that served great coffee and they were both light or medium roast V60 drip places that looked like they were teleported straight from the PNW. I wasn't a fan of Italian coffee either, but that was down to the fact that I just don't care for espresso or espresso-based drinks. I like 12oz of black drip coffee - preferably in a cup with a lid that I can sip on for like 40 minutes without it getting cold. I'm not saying that's the ultimate way to drink coffee, but just my favorite.

Tokyo used to be the land of undrinkable burnt/over-roasted coffee (excluding their amazing canned coffee, as chronicled herein: what is the best japanese canned coffee )

but over the last 10 years, every SF coffee 3.0 brand is now represented so it's kind of bizarrely charming to be walking around seeing people queued for your neighborhood spot back home. But also sometimes the concepts get mixed as Flour + Water (modern italian restaurant) gets re-branded as coffee/cafe for mixed use which is something we don't have here (strictly dinner in SF).

In case anyone hasn’t been following along, Biden apparently asked for access to the Channel 5 subscriber email database, after his interview, and used it to pump his $Laptop meme coin, which crashed 98% minutes after launch. His whole recent media / online push was leading up to the scam, which a lot of people saw coming a mile off.

I learnt my coffee drinking in an Italian university, espresso for 500lire a cup every hour on the hour, espresso, machiatto or, at a stretch, a cappuccino. Buy a ticket crowd up to the bar get served a drink gulp it down leave and go back to class. I bet it’s still better than 95% of the espresso drinks I’ve been subjected to.

It wasn’t till I got to Melbourne that I came to a city with even a remotely similar density of decent coffee places, even if they do use too much milk. Despite years of improvement London remains an awful place to buy coffee. I find myself looking for places that serve all-press beans, as a sign of some kind of expertise with espresso machines. All-press doesn’t even make it into the top 5 places roasting within 500m of my front door, let alone in the wider city, but they got bought by Asahi and got taken to the world.

Which brings me to Tokyo, as steve shasta says it is a place of the very highs and lows of coffee making. (Props to the all-press in toranomon Hills as a good place to work from, and my favorite local roaster, supreme’s, Meiji-jingu koenmae shop). I will say in trad Japanese coffee’s defence, I quite like delice de France’s siphon; available early in the morning in many train stations, but if you want a decent cup, look for someone who trained in Melbourne, you can’t quite order a magic but you can get enough shots in the milk to make it taste of something.

Worst thing about Japanese coffee; it’s an afternoon beverage so finding somewhere open at 7 in the morning is nigh on impossible. All hail boss in a can, you can even get cans with milk no sugar now.

Hard agree with this. The idea that professors— especially poorly paid contingent faculty— need to readjust their lesson plans, LMS, and entire class structure to make things feel okay for single students with deep behavioral or learning issues is completely insane afaic.

I'm not going to comment on other majors, but I can't fathom why an advisor wouldn't steer a student past a major requiring you to call and talk to strangers and turn shit over quickly, often with little thanks besides a grade.
