Murphy and Allan.

I know it's early doors but I have been pleasantly surprised with the way they have been going they both played their best games in the red and black last night, and I believe Murphy would be in the top 5 of our B&F count so far.

And never let it be said that umpires aren't influenced by the media, some of our umpires need to be taken to a dark room and beaten within an inch of their lives.

I read somewhere that there is a huge difference in free kicks for and against essendon BH (before Hird) and AH (after Hird) in the bombers favour.
Could the umpires be favouring them subconsciously???

Found them, its crap. The stats are basically the same BH and AH. 31 for, 41 ag BH, and AH - 103 for 116 against. Just saw Fridays 7 for and 18(!) against. Subconcious or not they do seem to swing with the media.

Shows the futility and irrelevance of counting frees for and against. A 13 free difference over seven games, works out to a difference of less than two kicks a game.

Two kicks going one way or the other, in a game where each side handles the ball 250-300 times? As Grant Thomas said, who cares?

Best of luck to Allen and Murphy, who both looked gone for all money last year. Even if they finish first and second in the Brownlow, Carlton still did the right thing trading them because they'd both run their race at Octopus Oval.

I disagree Fred. Even one kick can change the course of a match let alone 13 or half a dozen even. Logically it shouldn't make a difference but it does IMO.

"Even if they finish first and second in the Brownlow"

Well after Friday night Murphy could easily have 8 Brownlow votes so far this year. If this form keeps up....

Umps arent that stupid, the bloke is the most outside player ever to play the game, the ultimate in receivers, even more so then mcleod or nick stevens, he'd be lucky to poll 8 votes in 8 years, remember even his race hate him

I don't remember Murphy ever polling a truckload of votes at Carlton, 8 in eight years would be pretty close to seeing it out.

At Essendon he is playing the wide receiver's role properly (ie, closer to side of the 50m square than the fence). You can do that and still be value to the team as long as you run hard and your disposal is excellent, and Murph's usually is when his mind's on the job, which for most of his last couple of years at Carlton it wasn't.
But Allan is the bigger surprise. He'll have polled more Brownlow votes than Murphy to this stage of the season.

has a wide wide receiver ever won a brownlow??

plenty of duds have, but no wide receivers

jsa, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter Moore at Melbourne would nearly fit the bill.

Brian Wilson?

Barry Round would have been one of the widest footballers ever to win a Brownlow but he wasn't really a 'receiver'.

Brad 'Danny Partridge' Hardie was a receiver who was wide in the same sense as Bazza, as well as playing wide of his opponent.

Considering he's being tagged most weeks it's a amazing how much of the footy he is getting, I think Carlton played three men on him, for instance. Have a look at one of our matches before you make a call like that, it's obvious you haven't. And WTF does his race have to do with anything?

chrisso (chrisso), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ive seen you matches chrisso, your an overrated team who when hird doesnt play are ordinary, and you'd be the only bloke (or woman??) who reakons murphy can play. Carlton played 3 men on him to catch him and belt him.

His race has nothing to do with it, except to point out that nobody likes the bloke, he's a squeeler, sook and softc..., fits in well at essendon

chrisso (chrisso), Monday, 24 May 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

jsa, Monday, 24 May 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I took the 4.50 for the Pies making the 8 today. Easy money :P

Tiges were no value for the spoon. They will finish in 11-15th mediocrity...
