On considering the thread title I apologise to all Port Adelaide supporters - a touch cruel but definitely tongue in cheek!

Extract from The Age - Caroline Wilson.....
Australian rugby sensation Lote Tuqiri has now turned his sights on his third football code, accepting an invitation to train with AFL club Port Adelaide during the pre-season.

And Power coach Mark Williams has not ruled out trying to recruit the 24-year-old Wallaby, a star of Australia's World Cup campaign, whose athletic and marking ability prompted Williams to approach the Fijian-born footballer after last week's thrilling final against England.

It's a publicity stunt. He will train with them, but he wont play for them, they couldn't afford him. Rugby has no salary cap.

Anti-Lion, Monday, 1 December 2003 10:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes lucy we cant afford him, we dont get the extra dough that brisbane get so we have to offload players in order to remain under the salary cap. One day soon the almighty lions will be doing the same and it will be a delight to see

jsa, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes 'jsa' I'm sure that when our players stop taking paycuts to stay together as a group we will lose players and then we'll have to be content with the wealth of young talent we have coming through, those that have been drafted and a choice few we have managed to develop locally.

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wish my team got extra money like the stoopid Swans and the even stoopider Lions. God I hate Queensland and Lions supporters. They are blow-in blow hards.

Anti-Lion, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 05:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why don't you tell us how you really feel! Blow-ins how disgusting how dare they try to spread the game!

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Awww, poor Port Power. Yer breaking my heart JSA! Just how long is that window of opportunity going to stay open for one of the best lists in the comp? Better waltz through while you can mon ami because once that window shuts footy becomes a very painful game.

regards,

REB

Anti Lion you sound like a bit of an expert at blowing hard. Show us your true colours...although you sound like you might don the black and white like the rest of the sheep come winter.

regards,

REB

PS - Either that or JSA is fragmenting again!

:P

Could Anti Lion be Lion from WLOT ABC Cricket Forum, spreading goodwill in a new place? He knows sod all about AFL but since when has that mattered?

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 03:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

REB id suggest our list might be a bit overrated, looks good on paper but is unable to produce come finals time, you know the sort, being a redleg fan.

Our window closed the day chocko's game plan went from the traditional port adelaide style to a water polo style. The old style mightnt have been pretty but at least it was successful come finals time.

jsa, Wednesday, 3 December 2003 04:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Greetings Jase. How can you say your list is overrated when you've topped the tree twice running? I agree the game plan is dodgy though, in fact, it reminds me of Neil Craig's game plan of the mid 90's and we all know where that got the Legs.

I reckon you started to look a bit wobbly when you lost to the Catters and struggled to beat the Dogs in successive weeks. Then Choko told the boys to take the foot off the pedal in that awful match against Richmond.

How can you instruct your team to do anything else than have a red hot dip at the pill? Strange days indeed my wharfie chum.

REB

ps - as for "looks good on paper but is unable to produce come finals time", that was the old Norwood. Now we look shite all year round grumble grumble grizzle grizzle...

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dont know about the Geelong thing we played shite you played the best of your ability and if it wasnt for a bit of arse from benny we still would have won.

Still reckon its overrated, sides play us differently during the season, other then sides under the gun most sides almost concede when they come to footy park and allow us to play volleyball, knowing full well that when the finals come they will play the man on man style.

Chocko has plan A and no plan B, is surrounded by yesmen

jsa, Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Williams doesn't have what it takes to be a senior coach.

No charisma, brains, foresight, strategic plan or deep understanding of the game. He just skims the surface.

Develop a real coach or do an Eagles and buy in a Malthouse or Sheedy. You guys will only ever be promises with the likes of Choko, Cahill or Cornes.

Westener (Westener), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Harsh fellas. Have you thought that Chokos plan is because he has a lot of soft recievers - the Burgoynes, Nick Stevens, Brent Guerra (both now gone) and not a hell of a lot of hard ball winners.

The most effective ruckman of the AFL in 2002 was virtually wiped out of the game in 03 due to rule changes, and Ports best midfielder (Francou)busted a knee and missed the season?

Anyhoo, don't like defending teh Alberton Ferals - its the only game of AFL I have been to where there are more fans outside the stadium sucking in cancer sticks at quarter time and half time than in the ground...

Bennö (Bennö), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Benno, only 1 burgoyne is soft, peter has been in the leading 3 at the club for hardball gets and tackles for the last 3 years. Agreed about stevens fancy paying $500K per season for a receiver whose heart is at collingwood.

Its all game plan benno, got 2 power forwards, and the best group of aborginal crumbers going around, so why would you kick it long and quickly when u can piss fart around with it.

i gather you were outside enjoying a winnie blue with us??

jsa, Wednesday, 3 December 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think the prelim final against Collingwood really showed up the Port game plan and any fine tuning to the club needs to start there and not really on the list.

The need to bring the ball forward by the use of uncontested possessions in the middle and the time taken to find these made the Collingwood on-ballers and backmen stars. As the Lions showed, hard at the ball flowing football was required. Thing is that Port did this the week before against the Bombers in the rain, why change for a dry MCG?

jsa

of course I was outside sharing in the fresh air - when in Rome, do as the romans do. But I could not bring myself to drink Worst End. HOW BAD IS THAT BEER???

Bennö (Bennö), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

correct benno the stuff is shite

stick to coopers

jsa, Friday, 5 December 2003 01:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Romans don't bag the local beer Benno...West End is an acquired taste...a bit like Adelaide water ha ha. Besides, each to his own as they say..I can't stand XXXX or Any Tooheys beer, but the locals swear by the stuff.

regards,

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Friday, 5 December 2003 03:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, 4X in qld is a nice drop, Tooheys New has its time and place (not Victoria) but Worst End. I barely finished the 6 pack ;)

Bennö (Bennö), Friday, 5 December 2003 03:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lote apparently couldn't hack it in league, he appararntly couldn't it in union. What makes him think he can hack it in Aussie Rules?

Kiwi in Oz (Kiwi in Oz), Monday, 8 December 2003 01:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Benno, until you've had warm, flat XXXX served in a half-rinsed plastic glass taken straight out of the dishwasher (like you could get at the Gabba in the 1970s) you have not had bad beer.

The sad part is, 20 years later at the same place I had an ice-cold, fully carbonated XXXX in a brand new, chilled glass....and it wasn't massively better.

XXXX would make better Harpic than beer.
