Schwab concedes that John Turnbull got it wrong and that Judd was obviously the better choice, but goes on to say that he has faith in Turnbull and will be vindicated in the long run.
I have to ask the question. Is it necessary for an outgoing coach to air the Club's dirty linen in an effort to justify why he has not produced?
Surely it would have been better to let sleeping dogs lie and go away with your bitter thoughts kept to yourself.
You have to wonder what that sort of comment will do to youngster and his confidence in the long term.
I really do wonder about the ego trip that some of these people are on to try and justify their existence.
It really is immaterial whether Judd is better than Hodge or the other way around. The real trick is getting support behind the player that you have drafted and try to get the best out of him. That support will be repaid threefold if the player knows that he has the confidence of the club behind him.
Perhaps this is the real indication that clubs are tending to treat players as cattle rather than individuals that can add to the overall fabric of the club structure.
Sad times indeed.

Of course Schwab shouldn't have bought in, but he was only responding to a (stupid) question that the crayon-crunchers have been asking for years and are starting to ask more regularly, and not just about Hodge and Judd.
It's The Draft, it's off-season, there are two indications straight away that it is complete bollocks. Remember at all times the Draft is a glorified game of Keno, and there's some hope of keeping perspective.

Q- I have to ask the question. Is it necessary for an outgoing coach to air the Club's dirty linen in an effort to justify why he has not produced?
A- YES, otherwise he might as well release a press statement and a T Shrirt saying 'I was hella crap'______________________________________________________________________
Q- Surely it would have been better to let sleeping dogs lie and go away with your bitter thoughts kept to yourself.
A - Not on your life. The lying Dogs have been asleep since 1954. Not a good look.______________________________________________________________________
Q- You have to wonder what that sort of comment will do to youngster and his confidence in the long term.
A- Not at all. Chris Judd is a very confident player who won't suffer from unfair comparisons with Luke Hodge LOL._____________________________________________________________________
Q-I really do wonder about the ego trip that some of these people are on to try and justify their existence.
A-It aint rocket surgery. People on an ego trip always have tickets on themsleves.

REB

You knew Schwab had lost all touch with reality when you heard his press conference after the Essendon match/debacle. Why is the president still there? Why is Brereton still there?
― chrisso (chrisso), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 06:59 (twenty years ago)
It's cutting out Judd's afterburners.
Fair comment chrisso. He, and they, really do seem to have lost it. Sometimes I wonder if Brereton ever had it.
I guess that the point I was trying to make is the different ways that clubs go about their business and the way that they treat their players.
It seems to me, and I realise that I'm looking at it from a long distance, that your players can band together and be a club or can go off on tangents and be a group of players. I think the latter is what St Kilda suffer from - a really talented group of players, whereas Brisbane have banded together and been a club. Though I will add a rider to that. With the criticism from Mal Michael and a possible fallout from the GF loss, Brisbane could easily become a group.
I think that, in 2004, Port became a club and the results are on the board. I would like to think of my team as a club.
The real tragedy, in my mind, is that Luke Hodge does not deserve to be compared with any other player in a "I wish..." category. He plays his game his way and is judged by his achievements not by his comparison to others.
I think Schwab, Dickerhead and all the others should leave the kid be and let him play his game.

As for Why is the president still there? Why is Brereton still there? Answer: Because most people saw it for what it was.

Come on Jeff. You know you want to. You know all Hawthorn wants you to. Make your move, and put both sets of clowns out of all our miseries.
You may think you are being a loyal supporter by still defending that Essendon schemozzle. But just like in some circumstances the kindest thing a parent can do for their child is plant a size-10 boot square up his backside, sometimes supporting a club means not closing ranks. Stupid blind faith and refusal to be seen bowing to outside criticism meant Carlton fans had to cop John Elliott for about 15 years longer than was really necessary.

I agree that sometimes the best thing a parent can do is "plant a size-10 boot square up his backside" of their kids, but football is a bit different to parenting. Essendon have been doing the same thing for years and years (and unless you're like 12y.o, you should know that). You may not be one of those that saw it for what it is was, but thankfully, most of the people I know are. :)Havagudweeken ... :)
P.S. I'm not turning into psuedo Carlton Supporter am I?
