Simba banished from the pride lands

Who was that team that played against West Coast last week cos it sure as shit weren't the Brisbane Lions. Will the return of the angry man turn back the remorseless hands of father time that appear to be catching up with the side as a whole (in general).

There just doesn't seem to be anything there. Yes, West Coast are playing well but apart from Scott and Acker there didn't seem to be much pride in the Lion jumper to this observer.

Rejoice. The king is dead....long like the king.

You can make a number of excuses for Brisbane REB but they do not overcome the fact that they are not combining as a team, the Hawthorn game reminded me of some of the last games under John Northey. Lots of blokes running around just wanting to make sure their guy does not get an uncontested possession, very little combination when we get the footy.

Its funny but I don't think Brisbane are making more skill errors than the other sides, I thought there where more skill errors in the Sydney-Melbourne game and at the MCG yesterday than at the 'Gabba on Sunday. But that could be because we don't look to take risks to move the ball forward, long bombs to the square are not hard skill wise but at the moment they are a certain to turn-over possession. Run further, extra link or handball and kick on the run from 40m rather than long bomb from 60m!! Brisbane don't have a functioning forward line, Brown will help but he is not the difference.

The style of play has got to change just a little bit to reflect the changes in the team. Brisbane are not an old team, what other team on the weekend had 6 guys with less than 18 games of footy and no side has played as many first gamers this year as Brisbane, but they are a side in transition. We all know that they have been an all time great side, in the next 2-3 seasons we find out if they are an all time great club.

Spot on. Interesting to note too that Leigh Matthews has never successfully overseen the rebuilding of a team.

You could argue about Leigh and the rebuilding thing but nowadays with all those other "concerned citizens" sitting in the box it becomes more of a joint effort.

I really like Vossy comments this morning about getting your head over the ball or go away. This is why they are considered a hard team, not this push and shove crap.

It's only 5 weeks into the 2005 season, but Brisbane seems to be a club struck down by bitterness and crisis at the realisation that their era is over.

On one hand there is their on field performances. There currently on the bottom of the ladder with just one win from their 5 matches and even their win was marred by controversy with theRiewoldt incident. Since then their performances have gotten steadily worse.

They were more or less forced into keeping White and Pike by the retirements of Lynch and Hart etc and so far they have been dismall at best. Bradshaw has kicked some goals but overall has been disappointing up forward, he simply goes missing far too often and seems unable to handle being a key forward on a weekly basis. And their midfield has been struck down by injury and apathy.

And off hte field they've become mired in petty squabbles and conspiracy theories that they generally avoided in their premiership years. First, there was the pointless squabbling the Brisbane administration got invovled in with Eddie McGuire over his commentary of the Riewoldt incident. Matthews snipe that McGuire exagerated how many times they went after Riewoldt was very petty IMO.

And now Matthews in the last week is still whining about the preliminary final scheduling, saying something along the lines of that it was a conspiracy theory created by the AFL against his side, doesn't say much for the Brisbane mindset this season, its as if they're focussing on last year's missed opportunities because they think they're season is over.

Interesting to note too that Leigh Matthews has never successfully overseen the rebuilding of a team.

Matthews has been rightly praised for his performances as coach but he's been criticised by Collingwood supporters for his poor finish there and the weak state of the list at the end of 1995. It will now be his next main challenge to ensure that the same doesn't occur at the Lions.

Sorry Bird but the buck stops at the top.

I guess it just depends on how good or bad a light you want to cast things in chrisso and the Lions have built up a lot of love/hate over the past couple of years. But you play poorly you've got to expect to cop it, the whole football world knows that they can play better, and that's the point.

McGuire = who cares. Shit in, shit out.

No one on the green earth can say the preliminary finals set up was fair last year. Will this year preliminary finals be played 24 hour apart, and have one team 36 hours behind in preparation?

No chrisso this is not quite true - I'd say the media are doing the bitter crisis ridden thing not so the club.

On one hand there is their on field performances. There currently on the bottom of the ladder with just one win from their 5 matches and even their win was marred by controversy with theRiewoldt incident. Since then their performances have gotten steadily worse.

Thin ice I'd suggest considering you've just vacated that position.
No doubt Essendon's second win will be marred by the Hird controversy.

Hart was not offered a contract - he wanted to stay on for another year. Agree that White and Pike have been less than brilliant. Bradshaw has not taken the opportunity to cement his place as full forward I agree. Yes the midfield has been struck by injury. Losing Richard Hadley has definitely hurt the side. Simon Black's pointless suspension has cost the side but each week his match fitness improves.

I notice Hird got off his gutless hit on the Collingwood player, from behind and late.

Even the AFL has agreed this was unfair. An Matthews comments were as he has stated in-house and not for public consumption.

As far as I can see we are a team who have lost some confidence with a lot of new talent finding its way.

There is no way we can be the Brisbane Lions of 2001,2002,2003 or even 2004 - because we are a different side now, new players and looking for our new niche.

Quite frankly Chrisso whether we win or not I'll still be there each year supporting.

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

Some good points there Chimp Chick but I'd be most surprised if James Hird got suspended for that 'gutless' hit, it shouldn't have been a report in the first place, what is the game coming to? I would never be accused of being a Bomber sympathesier but James Hird is the most courageous player I have ever seen play the game.

As for 'thin ice', it is Essendon v Brisbane this week and if you manage to lose to Hawthorn and Essendon I'd say you blokes would be in deep diggery doo.

GORN. On Fox League Teams Jason Dumbasstill reckons Port were gone but to me he's on the wrong horse with that prediction. The Lions have no run at all and that's why they are dropping games. Yes, Brown still commands respect and Acker and the Scotts aren't playing too badly but guys like Pike and Voss are running up and down on the spot and some of the other premiership players don't appear to be working hard enough. You can't blame the kids because they haven't had the games under the belt due to Brisbane's success in the last four seasons.

The Dogs are a gutsy, honest side and a team that will run hard all day. Any team with pace around the midfield and a rebounding defence will trouble the Lions this year. Brisbane need to win 10 of the next 15 games to make the eight this season and I can't see them doing it.

Too true REB, but I'll still never write them off until 10 minutes after the final siren on Grand Final day! And by then it wont matter 'cause I'll be busy booking my Membership for the following season
:)

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Monday, 9 May 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

Well said Chimp Chick. You should be thanking me for writing them off...they'll bounce back now :)

Thanks REB! Between that and the return of Browny and return to form of several other top knotch players we should be right! :)

Brisbane or Adelaide this week?

Tough one.

chrisso (chrisso), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Adelaide at home. Both teams ordinary.

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

Nah we have a plan this week!! LMAO

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

I guess any win in Adelaide is a good win but IMO Brisbane are a long way short of the better teams ATM. Adelaide were absolutely disgraceful in the first half on Saturday (how does Petrie get a gig?) and in the end the Lions were lucky to get the win with the Crows running right over the top of them in the finish.

Black showing some form would be heartening, and Power should be in the middle more as he really does give them some zip when he's in there. Hopefully for the Lions sake his wrist isn't too bad.

chrisso (chrisso), Monday, 16 May 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

I hear it's broken chrisso which is a real blow for us. Yes we were lucky to get the win. I believe we won it in the first quarter but have to say the win was cemented by brilliant work from Justin Leppitsch and Mal Michael in the final quarter. Good to see the team playing with a little more confidence.

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Monday, 16 May 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

Any defender can be brilliant when you aren't playing any forwards!

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

No you're wrong this time REB, don't take away from Michael and Leppitsch a well deserved congratulations. You can't tell me they didn't win the game for us. Justin Leppitsch has been playing great the last couple of weeks and certainly deserves the credit. This one I'll fight you on!

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

They didn't win the game for you chimp chick the Crows did, generous bastards.

regards,

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Wrong again REB. We won in first quarter - Leppa and Michael held on to that lead when we let the Crows back into the game. They had far more entries into the 50 then we did only our backline and their inaccurate kicking saved the game.
