THE SHERMANATOR TAKES THE PRIZE

With family ties to Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting and former Essendon and Bears great Roger Merrett, it should perhaps be no surprise that impressive Brisbane Lions teenager Justin Sherman is the Round 6 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee.

Sherman has made a smooth transition to senior ranks since debuting with the Lions in Round 4 against Hawthorn, featuring in the team’s best player list in all three games in which he has played.

Sherman, who turned 18 on Australia Day, collected 14 possessions and three goals on debut, provided the ‘assist’ in at least four goals against West Coast among his 15 possessions, and was a real livewire in the midfield with 19 possessions and two goals against Essendon last Saturday night.

He played in all four pre season games and the regional challenge series, impressing especially against Richmond in a loss in the team’s final hit-out before the home-and-away season began. Sherman maintained the high standard in the opening reserves games, before getting his chance at senior level.

Sherman is a third cousin of cricketing great Ponting, and is no slouch with the bat and ball himself. Prior to leaving Hobart for the Gabba last summer, he averaged 445 in lower grade cricket.

He is also a second cousin of dual Bombers premiership player and Bears legend Merrett, and a first cousin of former Tasmanian wicketkeeper Richard Soule.

Sherman played more than 100 games with the Clarence junior club in Hobart and also starred for the Clarence seniors in last years finals series. He was an All-Australian under 17 for Tasmania, and represented Australia against Ireland in the International under 17 series before that.

He was drafted with the Lions’ third pick at No.45 in last year’s NAB AFL Draft.

Sherman is one of eight players to have made their league debut with the Lions in the first six weeks of the 2005 season.

Justin’s junior football club, the Clarence Junior Football Club will be the recipients of the NAB Club Recognition Award. As a part of this award, the Clarence Junior Football Club will receive both practical and financial resources from the National

He's going OK at the moment, LL.

Just be careful he doesn't "tank" before the end of the season.

It's not a "case" or tanking early but can he continue to "carry on"

:)
