We can't get a forward so close the door, you're letting the draft in.

regards,

That Melbourne may pick up Robbie Copeland with their first pick, upsetting Richmond's plans. It was in the paper so it must be true!!

Still not convinced he will go. This is a bloke when asked by the club to move closed to Brisbane for training purposed move to the very outer northern suburbs, closer to Caboolture than the 'Gabba. In the process of building a house by Deception Bay - hates the city.

Still the offer is suppose to be $100K above the Lions.

It'd be a typical result for Richmond if they did miss Copeland. They strut around the October 'swap and sell' chasing anything that moves (and occasionally catching something worthwhile) and conduct 90% of their recruiting through the media.

When Greg Miller moved there from the Roos (after two flags on a shoestring), the era of bluff bluster and bullshit was meant to be over at Richmond but if the Dean Solomaon fiasco's anything to go by, he has swallowed the 'local culture' wholesale.

I like the Tigers and have a soft spot for them, even their large band of fair-weather supporters. If they ever put it all together they will be as big as the best of them. But Christ, what a frustrating team to follow - Are Richmond the new St Kilda ?

Coach like Wayne Britian would do them a power of good. Sorry Danny!!

Can someone please explain all this about the draft system to me? I read a bit about it in the paper, but I can't quite understand how the picks are allocated, or why there are 2 drafts, or anything else for that matter.

Thank you.

The picks are initially allocated according to where the team finished the prev year, so the bottom team gets the fist pick, the second bottom the second pick, and so on. Each team has five picks this way and may have more afterwards depending on how many spots they have left on their list.

Clubs can trade their own players for draft picks.

There are other rules that apply, there's a father-son rule for instance, and clubs can lost draft picks for rule-breaking.

There is a lot of complete bulldust spoken about the draft at this time of the year, none of which is worth hearing. Basically the draft is a giant Keno game.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That was the first draft, the one that takes place on Saturday. An established player can nominate for this draft but you'll most likely find that the first 40 or 50 players drafted will be 17 and 18 year old kids just out of school.

The second draft, next month, is smaller and mainly involves established AFL players who have left their clubs for whatever reason and weren't able to find another club through either the pre-draft trades or the draft itself. In recent years less than a dozen players a season have been recruited in the second draft, but the numbers may go up again this year because there seem to be more, and better, players available.

"Each team has five picks this way and may have more afterwards depending on how many spots they have left on their list."
"Clubs can trade their own players for draft picks."

So that would explain why some clubs have 3 picks, when some have as many as 8. I found that a little perplexing.

I wonder whether it is just coincidence that the national draft day is on the same day as the World Cup Rugby final?

The way England play, the draft might be more exciting television....
