Leigh Colbert

Well... I thought the Kangas would have put up a better fight than that! Anyhoo.. I didn't know Leigh Colbert was hanging up the boots. So who's the flag fave now - West Coast or St Kilda? I think whoever comes west (hopefully the Crows) will be very tired.

I didn't see the end of the game Christina, but did Colbert announce his retirement?

Flag fave for me is still tied between Sydney and West Coast. I'm slightly leaning towards Sydney - would love to see them win a flag. But then again would Love Woosha (and his team) to win a flag as well.

Saints.

Coast won't make the Grand Final, very lucky to win on the weekend.

chrisso (chrisso), Sunday, 4 September 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

GF? Swans. The two Croweaters will kill each other next weekend, and whoever gets through will lose to WCE. Swans will win next weekend, roll the Saints who drop the enthusiastic young guys to bring back injury prone blokes and will get rolled. Swans will exact their revenge on cheating umpires and win their first flag as a Sydney team...

Colbert led the team off by himself, and shed a tear. And the way he threw a few suggested he might have known the end was nigh

Big Savaloy missed the birth of number 2 to get walloped... Happy fathers day Sav!

No flag for you Colbert. You should have joined Essendon or Brisbane when you walked out on the Cats when they needed you most.

Sad end to a gutsy courageous player.

I too would like you to have a slice, a very big slice of them both. Sharp knives and all that! :)

...another cutting remark to the Chimp Chick :)

Colbert was a talented and gusty player, a good career Leigh.

Now can he, or REB, tell us the real reason he left Geelong??

Big Bird (Big Bird), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

He left Geelong because they were a rabble at that time.

chrisso (chrisso), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

I would like to know the real reason he left Geelong as well Bird. Now that Colby has gone all we have to boo now is Maloney :)

There was some interesting reading in the papers on Saturday about the atmos at Geelong around the time Colbert left.

Apparently a few blokes, some of whom had already been Top Cat once but hadn't liked it much, made too little effort to hide how miffed they were at this young upstart getting picked ahead of them.

'Now that Colby has gone all we have to boo now is Maloney :)'

What about that towering presence in AFL football, David Clarke?????

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

LOL...ah Clarkey yes. You know you are crap when the former team's fans don't even bother to boo you...Spriggsy would be in the same boat if he could ever get a game.

Regarding the Top Cat scenario...It would have to be more than that wouldn't it Fred? After all, even though I'm no Colby fan he is a hard bloke and surely he wouldn't have left the club just because of that. We certainly could have done with Colbert during those bleak early seasons of Bomber's reign. But getting rid of Ayres was a godsend as Adelaide have found out this season.

Depends how you swallow the club spin that gets trowelled out at times like that I suppose. Some recalcitrants might not see a bloke reacting to that kind of crap by saying 'up yours' to the lot of them necessarily as a weak action.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 8 September 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Mr "Show-me-the-money-and-a-premiership" Colbert has retired no more successful with the Roos than he was at Geelong. I guess he got his just desserts. Being a Cats supporter, that makes me extremely happy.

Lisa K, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

REB will be happy a fellow CAT contributor. :)

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

But getting rid of Ayres was a godsend as Adelaide have found out this season.

Raises an interesting point, REB. Just what does happen to discarded AFL coaches when their time is up?

Do they retire gracefully and be never heard of again except on ABC Sportstalk Shows as a curiosity interview, do they turn up on the Gold Coast as occasional ABC or TV guest commentators or do they just slide into obscurity knowing they are complete failures as a human being(they don't all win flags!!) and expect to be asked for their opinion every Grand Final week?

Maybe it's the thought of ignomy that drives Sheeds!!

Westener (Westener), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't like to even begin to descend into the murky pond that is Sheedy's motivational drive. While it is true that many men of his age have a room full of videos, Kevin Sheedy's videos are about football...scary stuff.

Good on ya Lisa K. Fight the good fight. Go Cats.

REB
