What a great Grannie!

Well done to both teams for producing one of the all-time classices. Must admit that I did feel for the Eagles when the siren blew, they showed a lot of character to come back they way they did. I thought Kerr was especially inspirational and it looked as though he may snatch it for them near the end.

Leaping Leo's mark will noew become the stuff of Grand Final legend.

chrisso (chrisso), Saturday, 24 September 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Agree, chrisso. A really terrific game.

Eagles had their chances, a couple of posters, a couple of relatively easy shots missed and a chance for a mark in front with 5 seconds to go. Unfortunately, not to be. Swans also had a few shots that went astray(Jude Bolton was unlucky)so all in all it evened itself out.

No complaints from this punter, disappointed with the result but well done Swannies on a great win.

Westener (Westener), Sunday, 25 September 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Forgot the most important point - Roll on 2006!!!!!!!!!

Westener (Westener), Sunday, 25 September 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

jsa, Sunday, 25 September 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Once again this year spent the last few weeks of the season with work in very, very far western Queensland.

Watched the game in the local pub, lots of good footy brains out there, they get a lot of their TV from SA so they see more footy than us 'beach bums'. Great game and great outcome, see the TV ratings were not too shabby either.

Me and the boys from the back of buggery want to get on early, Bulldogs for the 8 and Bulldogs for the flag. Can you make that into a double Benno, or don't Sportsbet take bets like that. Of course this must be tempered with the amount of VB consumed, but that's my call and I'm sticking with it!!!!!!!!

Big Bird (Big Bird), Monday, 26 September 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

Can't double up on that, but I'll get you the odds for each leg...

Something everyone seems to have overlooked, including the umpires, during Leo Barry's grab- http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/imagedata/0,1658,5052672,00.jpg

before the ball reached the pack Kennelly grabbed Sampi's jumper and held him down throughout.Roberts-Thompson played the man too and held Hunter for nearly as long. That photo is going to be seen for a long time to come.

erm, hang on a minute, Monday, 26 September 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

I think best value out there is Carlton for the spoon at $2.75. Should be even shorter than that :)

Bennö (Bennö), Monday, 26 September 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

A few random rantings from the GF:

Credit where it's due: Goldspink and his mates did an A1 job and provided a clinic of how ALL matches should be umpired. They certainly did their bit to make the match great.

Saw some footage last week from about 1977 of Sean Dempster's old man Graeme in action on one of those Footy Flashback grabs Foxtel use to fill five minutes now and again. He was built like a pool cue, long straggly hair, tight, short shorts, he looked like a cross between Warwick Capper and Dave Hill from Slade. Fortunately Demps Jnr inherited all Snr's ability and none of his looks.

When Paul Roos mentioned 'the true believers' he was referring to the old South Melbourne diehards, but he used a very Sydney phrase (most famously used by that cartoon Sidneylander and five-minute Collingwood supporter Paul Keating) to do it. The man has class. If he hadn't, he may have been tempted to give Dick Colless the Alan Scott treatment.

Saw that photo in the local paper and the same thought crossed my mind. There was possibly a kick to Sampi, but, in the context of the game, how could it be paid?

Just got to accept that this one slipped by us.

Westener (Westener), Monday, 26 September 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

It was a good game and the result while not absolutely what I wanted was still good. It would have been wondeful to see John Worsfold get the grail this year but I'm sure it will be soon.

From the other side glad to see Roos and his group get some positive recognition.

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Monday, 26 September 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Lucy

I like the way you look at your footy. If I was not an eagles supporter I would feel the same way - I like Paul Roos and the Sydney Swans.

It has taken a couple of days for my husband and I to talk about it all, finally tonight we had a few drinks and "debriefed".

Roll on 2006!

I hope the season is as good as it was this year. And for you Lucy - I hope the Brissie Lions are back up there next year.

Christina, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

If I was not an eagles supporter I would feel the same way

Doubt it, you'd probably loathe the Eagles like the rest of us. Lucy only likes 'em because she srew up there. I can't stand John Worsfold and whilst I did feel for most of the Eagles players I think I would would have been sick if Michael Gardiner got a premiership medal. Thank God he didn't.

chrisso (chrisso), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Agreed chrisso, whats all this lovey dovey bullshit about the eagles.. 5 games clear, their supporters spruiking and even mentioning how they would back up the second year, f..k they stuffed it up and the clock is ticking with judd sure to be gone after next year.. fancy kicking 7 goals in a grand final, what a potent forward line they have... eagles..bwhahahaha

jsa, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Jase do you remember the saying about being better to be thought a fool than opening your mouth and removing all doubt?

You've just demonstrated your absolute lack of knowledge about footy.

Go join a netball forum or some other place where your inept ramblings might be misconstrued to be intelligence.

Westener (Westener), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Whats the matter Westy, you dont like it coming back in return, ya big sook

What in that text above isnt factual Westy!!!

Better to wear it like a man then sook Westy

jsa, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

Judd 'sure to be gone' after next year? Don't tell me Collingwood have got him as well?

Sorry Westy but it's hard to feel sorry for the Egirls when some supporters apparently had WCE Premiers 2005 shirts printed up in July!

regards,

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Out of contract and on the way home.

jsa, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

The Egirls would sell the Swan River before they let Juddy go Jase.

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

This non-existant forward line towelled my team up twice this year so I'm saying nothin'.

Did anybody kick more that 9 goals against the Swans in the finals?

Big Bird (Big Bird), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Well Chrisso and JSA I must have touched a nerve somewhere. I can say all the lovey dovey bullshit I want about the Eagles. For God's sake boys, settle the f..k down, it is after all a game of football.

Christina, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

just squaring up Christina, which is part of the game. BTW those comments were directed in your direction Christina.

jsa, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

Better to wear it like a man then sook Westy

To the contrary, jase, I'm not sooking at all. Just peed off with the incessant carp coming from a goose that does not know any better.

Why don't you run this garbage on Big Footy where it belongs with the rest of the juveniles.

You would probably fit in real well with Parrot, Ron and Bee Dee. Then again, you might even be them!!!!

Westener (Westener), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

For God's sake boys, settle the f..k down, it is after all a game of football.

I know, but I can still can dislike a team can't I? And anyway who likes Michael Gardiner anyway? The most punchable face in the league, and thats saying something when you've got contenders like Milne, Didak, Burton and Holland.

Hating some of the opposition teams and players is what makes football so enjoyable.LOL.:-)

chrisso (chrisso), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

'What in that text above isnt factual Westy!!!'

Judging on your past form, the bit about Judd. Back in May you were the Nostradamus that said that Luke Power as good as had his bags packed and the only reason he hadn't told anyone yet is that he was scared of Lethal kicking his teeth in (a ridiculous statement on about 2385 levels).

But it was only yet another Jase cheap shot, so WGAF? Maybe you and Mark Latham could get together sometime for a communal whinge-in and you can lash out in spite at each other.

Hating might be fun for the hater, but it sure as hell aint a spectator sport.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

Chrisso I can't stand Gardiner and not that fond of Cousins (but will admit Cousins is a good/more than good player). I hear he's up for trade, Gardiner that is - maybe he'll go to Collingwood - we can only hope!

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

Fred, just squaring up on some of the cheap shots taken by the eagle fan, who spruiked far too early and ended up with egg in the face, but unlike the other loving comments at how gallant the west coast were, ill take the other tack about how crap they were when the real pressure was applied for the last 6 weeks including an undeserved first final win, a lucky escape against the crows, then blowing a 10 point lead in the GF. All this from the mightly eagles, roll on 2006 i say

jsa, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

Not quite sure whether the criticisms of the Weagles forward line are valid... West Coast were the second leading scorers this year behind only the super-attacking Dogs and ahead of the much-vaunted St Kilda. Plus they kicked almost 30 goals against Port. :(
