Released as a nondescript single-sided one-track LP by Rough Trade in 1980, Live At West Runton finds Miller, in his second and only other use of the name The Normal, and one-time Scottish Mute artist Rental performing at the unlikely setting of Norfolk's premier music venue, formerly host to any touring glam rock group and by the late Seventies an obligatory stop-over for any gigging punk band, before being demolished in 1986. According to Julie Fielder, who wrote a now out-of-print book about the venue, and whose website What Flo Said contains a full list of bands that played there, Can even played a set there. It's not clear whether this gig was part of some bigger event or if this brief set was the main performance of the night. 'The gig was on a Tuesday,' Fielder tells me by email, 'so they may have just had a disco with the live appearance as a short interlude.'

Aube is a notable figure in the sub-genre of noise/experimental using single-source samples, but takes it to an extreme of sorts. Each album is themed, and all tracks are created using a specific sound. In this case, it is paper, specifically a copy of the Bible. Typically, he tends decidedly towards noise, but this one is a little more laid back.

Artist: Aube
Title: Hymn

. In 1973, Kelley, Shaw, Loren and Loren's girlfriend, Lynn Rovner, who called herself Niagara, formed a band named after one of their favorite B-movies Destroy All Monsters. During their first concert, at a comic-book convention, they took to the stage and played a violin, coffee can, saxophone and vacuum cleaner. Ten minutes and one Bad Sabbath song later, Loren said they were asked to leave.

It knew, the machine, how to make everything as lifeless and subhuman on a small scale as our newer urban developments are on a larger scale. Its real objective is the bathroom and the toilet, these most indisputable and original accomplishments of our time, just as Rococo furniture and Gothic cathedrals represent structures that define every other art object of their respective epochs. Now lavatoriality [Abwaschbarkeit] dominates; somehow, water runs from every wall, and even the most expensive products of our age’s industrial diligence now partake of the wizardry of modern sanitation, the a priori of the finished industrial product.

We might define the present situation more precisely if we employed a category found frequently in Marx’s correspondence with Engels, but a category which evaded Althusser’s vigilant symptomatic scrutiny. All this ‘shit’ (Geschichtenscheissenschlopff) in which both bourgeois sociology and Marxist structuralism stand up to their chins (Dahrendorf beside Poulantzas, modernization theory beside theoretical practice) has been shat upon us by conceptual paralysis, by the dehistoricising of process and by reducing class, ideology, social formations, and almost everything else, to categorical stasis.

passerines are the 'smart' or 'more highly evolved' breed of birds. their young are generally born helpless and naked as opposed to the fluffy newhatched of your generally-larger non-passerine fowl, but they very quickly develop a high intelligence and usually quite complex vocal abilities, fledging in rapid time. they include most of my favourite species

the main rhythmic line was interesting for the first few minutes, the slow ambient synth parts didn't really do much to interact/offset it, maybe if they were louder? it either needed to be shorter or have something else going on.

exploding violent waves of reason and irreason grapple for supremacy on the silken chessboard of virtuoso musicianship until an argument is calculated. the lyrics are barely human, barely, English - they seem more like the Latin which any revision might defile. rhythms, melodies and timbres cannot be treated individually - certainly cannot be comprehended. it feels like this record devised all of its parts simultaneously to a fault over the course of two thousand years of compositional consideration, then discarded all the lines that did not induce divine ecstasy, and then discarded all the ecstatic lines which did not feed directly into one another, amplifying through concatenation; what remains is fifty-eight minutes of audio nonpareil, a shimmering post-serialist omniharmonic shear through the very fabric of human reality that starts intense and organises ascent into the heavens therefrom. in short, the very greatest album that could be. my work is done. 10/10.

If hearing is inevitability then sound ended years ago. I bought and imbibed an end-of-the-world aesthetic. It's all smashed into my garage and you thought it'd outshine the world? More fool you. It's just me, willing to let a master copy happen under wraps. We have a lifetime of minutes to enjoy your maverick pomposity.

Initially: an edifying madness.
Later: a horrifying eventuality
Eventually: eroding out into every sound server. You found yourself! It was always hellbent on the ruining of ears, the trophying of minds, a recklessness bought off the sensing of others. A backboard prophecy amongst friends. 100/10
