Where should one start with Tolstoy?

Anna Karenina I'd guess, but would be interested in some other (shorter?) suggestions. He seems to keep coming up as a reference in books I've been reading recently, and I've never read him - it's kind of embarrassing when that happens. Yet - I've always been too intimidated to start any his books.

How about the short stories, like The Death of Ivan Ilyich.

yeah, the short stories are the way to go at first. highly readable, entertaining, and masterpieces in their own right. god knows which edition to go for. just pick up one of those death of ivan & other stories cheapies and have at it. (don't start with the kreuzer sonata though, cuz it might drive you insane.)
