Everything Was A Dollar Today At Meetinghouse Books! (A Picture Thread)

I had no idea! I went there because it was my first day off in 2 months. Just needed to go someewhere. But they need to make room for hundreds of boxes of books so every book was a dollar! One of my favorite stores. In South Deerfield. This is happening for weeks by the way. They are open Wed to Sun. It's a huge place and their stock is great and quirky.

Anyway, I went nuts. Didn't want to clutter the buying thread. I got some old faves too. Couldn't resist.

Beautiful thread. Gave me a morning buzz that's lasted all day, so far. Thinking of driving 500 miles & dropping a cool 20. Covet that Jean Stafford collection; really enjoyed Boston Adventure and The Mountain Lion.

Wow---just amazing.

Bingham's 'Pure Slaughter Value' is great. He ODed between the publication of that and his only novel, 'Lightning on the Sun', which is also excellent.

i haven't read the history of luminous motion since it came out in 1989. had such a huge impact on me at that time. curious what i'll think of it now. even the original u.s. hardcover and it's dust jacket had a big impact on me!

sometimes i can't believe that scott bradfield and joy williams aren't married. they are like the same person in a weird way. they both have been such an inspiration to me over the years.

scott seward, Monday, 13 April 2015 13:08 (ten years ago)

dark places of the heart = american title for cotters england, i think? i remember the novellas in the puzzledheaded girl being quite good, but all the details have vanished from my mind except for one of the characters rolling around in poison ivy as proof that nature is benign (or something like that). still have a bunch of stead i need to read.

no lime tangier, Monday, 13 April 2015 13:14 (ten years ago)

good thing about living in the south pacific, stead and frame books are cheap and plentiful.

no lime tangier, Monday, 13 April 2015 13:16 (ten years ago)

yup, dark places/cotters are the same. i have cotters in a u.k. trade paperback.

yeah, i guess ideally i should have 1st edition NZ frame hardcovers.

johnny crunch, Saturday, 18 April 2015 20:13 (ten years ago)

i hear they are trying to sell the whatley store. or the building. so, might not be there forever.

"And then there's the Peter Matthiessen material. We have around 1,000 books removed from the estate of the late, great novelist-naturalist-Buddhist. As you can see, it's a bit of a mix. Some of the material relates to his life and work, some belonged to his widow, and others were sent as tokens of respect from otherwise uncelebrated authors. One goodie: a book gifted to Matthiessen by his Snow Leopard travelling companion, George Schaller."

scott seward, Saturday, 18 April 2015 20:32 (ten years ago)

wow @ grey matter! didnt know abt that 1

yea the guy @ whatley said theyre trying to sell the bldg

Since this is one of the best picture threads EVRER, seems like a good place to link a few more paperbacks, mainly with musical (& related) themes:

Thought revive would be about that one giy whose paperback collection reached perfection at purchase number 300.

Is that Deborah Harry on the cover of that Josephine Tey book? Why yes, I believe it is.
