The Jar Jar Binks of literature

Some people on another board I post to were talking about The Lord of the Rings and about how several of them had got stuck at the Tom Bombadil stage and were put off reading any further because of him.

What book did you almost put down because a particular character was just SO annoying?

The closest thing I can recall is when I got exceedingly irritated at all the female characters in Robert Heinlein's books (when my daughter was reading Friday, I think, and I reread it along with her). I also had to bail on The Tale of Genji, because regardless of the translation, the guy just never learned and repeated the same mistakes in every chapter. Which was a different kind of annoyance.

What's wrong with Tom Bombadil in the first place? I thought he was kinda cool. I could see how others might not agree, but I don't see it being so bad that you put down one of the best books ever for it. If there's a book that I'd put down because of a character I hated, I guess it would be Clarissa, because of Clarissa.

Tom Bombadil reminds me of Ray McCooney from Little Britain.
