Yeah, I was surprised too!

Going for Illustrious House, which is a funny and moving final work from Queirós, despite the somewhat tedious historical novel-inside-a-novel.

The Purple Cloud is a trip, often tedious but memorably misanthropic.

I only know Les Vingt et un Jours d'un neurasthénique and love voting for it. A highly funny nihilistic masterpiece!

It was published 20-odd years before The Magic Mountain and contains even earlier reflections on/struggles with the wondrous technology of x-rays and how this changed the understanding of ontology. It's as funny as it is grim and at times just bonkers.
