Yeah, I was surprised too!

Going for Illustrious House, which is a funny and moving final work from Queirós, despite the somewhat tedious historical novel-inside-a-novel.

The Purple Cloud is a trip, often tedious but memorably misanthropic.

Liked the film of My Brilliant Career.

Sorry lol "year by year". Damn!

I've only read Kim.

Voted for Kim without a second thought.

Lily Dale, Monday, 31 August 2020 18:42 (four years ago)

Shit, blank on this one too. I might buy the winning book from each year (and not read it - see other thread).

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Monday, 31 August 2020 19:07 (four years ago)

The City & The Mountains by Eça de Queirós

Just ordered The Maias by same author, pretty excited.

I only know Les Vingt et un Jours d'un neurasthénique and love voting for it. A highly funny nihilistic masterpiece!

It was published 20-odd years before The Magic Mountain and contains even earlier reflections on/struggles with the wondrous technology of x-rays and how this changed the understanding of ontology. It's as funny as it is grim and at times just bonkers.
