Voted for Arsene Lupin. Leblanc is great fun and how can you resist the copyright-evading cheek of this one?

Also enjoyed the Forster, as always.

Why did you spoil my life making me do my M. A.? by Amrit Keshav Nayak - you and me both, Amrit buddy, you and me both

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 24 September 2020 16:12 (four years ago)

I've never related so hard to a book title.

jmm, Thursday, 24 September 2020 16:15 (four years ago)

Sitting this one out, as I haven't read any of these.

sock solipsist (pomenitul), Thursday, 24 September 2020 16:19 (four years ago)

Alternative translation of the title: Why did you educate me and destroyed my honour?[2]

jmm, Thursday, 24 September 2020 16:21 (four years ago)

Love Arsene Lupin. My French reading skills are not all they should be, so Arsene Lupin is my go-to when I want to make myself read a book in French.

Might vote Wind in the Willows though.

Why Did You Spoil My Life Making Me Do My M.A.? made me laugh for a solid minute.

Lily Dale, Thursday, 24 September 2020 16:37 (four years ago)

Schnitzler is a really great writer, read many of his novellas but I had no idea he wrote a novel

House on the Borderland is the only one I've read and I loved it. A visionary work that employs what I'd call much more modern cinematic techniques such as timelapse effects to dramatic ends, and some truly terrifying horror imagery

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Thursday, 24 September 2020 17:02 (four years ago)

I tried reading The Night Land, and just couldn't get past his amateurish style.

sock solipsist (pomenitul), Thursday, 24 September 2020 17:06 (four years ago)

I haven't read the Forster, which seems like the canonical choice here

I liked the Bennett but otherwise don't remember a thing about it

The Perfume of the Lady in Black is a decent follow-up to The Mystery of the Yellow Room, but neither of those are as good as The Circular Staircase, better known in its film versions as The Bat

I voted for The House on the Borderland, a classic of cosmic horror, dog latin otm ... but I haven't been able to get started with The Night Land either

Why Did You Spoil My Life Making Me Do My M.A.? made me laugh for a solid minute.

Yeah, this is an amazing title.

The Perfume of the Lady in Black

Is this the same as the film? I didn't know it was Leroux.

emil.y, Thursday, 24 September 2020 17:53 (four years ago)

The only ones I've read are two of the children's books, so not really motivated to vote.

emil.y, Thursday, 24 September 2020 17:56 (four years ago)

there's a 1931 film adaptation of Leroux's The Perfume of the Lady in Black but I think the 1974 giallo just borrows the title

Brad C., Thursday, 24 September 2020 18:23 (four years ago)

Why Did You Spoil My Life Making Me Do My M.A.?

Someone should write a modern version of this (substitute PhD for MA).

sock solipsist (pomenitul), Thursday, 24 September 2020 18:26 (four years ago)

Thanks, Brad - I was thinking of the giallo rather than the earlier film, heh.

emil.y, Thursday, 24 September 2020 18:43 (four years ago)

agree that the house on the borderland is great - a must read for weird fiction fans - and the night land is unreadable. carnacki and his pirate stories are entirely meh.

So many good things on this list: Maurice Guest, Sanshiro, A Room With A View, The Road into the Open (the Schnitzler), The Old Wives' Tale, House on the Borderland, Wind in the Willows. No idea which way to vote.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Friday, 25 September 2020 02:07 (four years ago)

Shame The Night Land is no good. The synopsis makes it sound interesting. I'd love to hear some sort of audiphile radio adaptation of House On The Borderland

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Monday, 28 September 2020 13:50 (four years ago)

Love Arsene Lupin. My French reading skills are not all they should be, so Arsene Lupin is my go-to when I want to make myself read a book in French.

Same!
