Kokoro for me - the tragicomedy of the protagonist obsessing so much over obedience to his mentor while treating his actual parents like shit.

The Corelli and Lagerlof both sound intriguing.

nb the Chesterton is the one where the UK falls under islamic rule and as a result - worst of all possible consequences! - alcohol is forbbiden so the hero travels around the country helping people get turnt. Unlikely to get a BBC adaptation anytime soon (or is it??).

I have read none of these.

The World Set Free is mentioned in The Making of the Atomic Bomb as inspiring Leo Szilard to work towards developing the bomb. He's the guy who first came up with the idea of the chain reaction, and the guy who wrote the letter Einstein signed and sent to FDR.

Kokoro or Ragged-Trousers.
Angel Island is interesting and depressing: some men are shipwrecked on an island of winged women, spend the rest of the books subjugating and ruining the women's lives, then cut off their wings.
World Set Free is also interesting but minor Wells.
