RFI the Matter of England

Any of the classics readable? Any contemporary tellings with some good gristly well-researched weirdness to chew on?

I remember as a youth enjoying the Lost Years of Merlin YA series (TA Barron) and a book called Mad Merlin (J Robert King). Having looked up these books just now these seem like they ought to be pseudonyms.
