Heroic Failure is a book by an Irish writer on why brexit was such a stupid idea. I started reading it a few years back cos i found it cheap in a sale in the chain newsagent in town here. I only didn't finish it cos I started buying books when i got to London.
I think he's a good writer. Was actually thinking about not having completed the book earlier and wondering where it was.

Most of these books could be the punchline to an Alan Partridge joke. Only missing Bravo Two Zero by Andy McNab, which actually improves with every read.

Is that a weird quasi ironic grouping. Seems a number of those are attacking elements of what is supposedly British.

Stevolende, Sunday, 30 January 2022 09:48 (three years ago)

Obviously Shipman is a cunt but I may need to do some research here

I mean I hate Akala but he's not a cunt, he's trying god bless him

Wonder how well it works asa sales tool anyway. It's not anywhere near St george's day is it?
Maybe somebody needed to remind people of some amorphous something since Brexit was coming apart at the seams and the govt was a joke?
Wasn't St George like Turkish or something anyway?

Stevolende, Sunday, 30 January 2022 11:04 (three years ago)

Georgian i think but Turkish nationalists have a lot of thoughts

It's hard to objectively poll a "worst book", because if people suspect a book is likely to be bad, they avoid it. Any poll results you get are more probably a reflection of "which author among these do I despise the most".

I had forgotten that Tom Bower was the author of the scathing biography of Corbyn and went and bought a couple of other books by him. Operation Paperclip. I mean obviously if he is going to attack Corbyn his perspective on everything else must be equally askew. Innit. Like.

Stevolende, Thursday, 31 March 2022 09:00 (three years ago)

Secret Barrister one is worst because I hate all these fucking coward ‘Secret’ whatever things. You know that whoever the actual person is, is the biggest cunt in whatever profession it is

Took the words out of my mouth, was very concerned about Corbyn’s “authoritarianism” iirc

mardheamac (gyac), Thursday, 31 March 2022 11:15 (three years ago)

setting aside the political attitudinising on twitter (which my learned friends and esteemed colleagues gyac and noodle vague characterise correctly), the LRB review of the secret barrister book was actually pretty positive: https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v43/n05/stephen-sedley/mischief-wrought

i can't imagine it's worse than anything by tom bower
