were you expecting otherwise?

The Redd 47 Ronin (Ken L), Saturday, 21 October 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I thought it would be at least as good as James Oliver Curwood's stories of valour in the north country etc etc Yukon-cakes, when I finally read it a couple of years ago. Maybe you have to read it at age 14?

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 21 October 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Reading it at 14 was exactly right for me. I glanced at it again when I was in my 20s and immediately put it down.

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 21 October 2006 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

Reading it in my mid-twenties, I loathed the book and everyone in it. I think I hurt a friend's feelings because she loved it at 14, too. OH WELL.

No, dude. Now you're just clutching at straws -- good Southern broomstraws, just like Mammy used to use.

one year passes...

I tried to read this as a teenager, made it about 60 pages in. Truman Capote found it a total hoot.

I think you need to loves you some camp to go the Capote way.
Never tried to read it, but then it never appealed in the slightest.

James Morrison, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 00:38 (seventeen years ago)

i only made it a half dozen pages in—it felt weird to be reading something and find it almost viscerally unpleasant

four years pass...

i just google book'd this to see if 'frankly my dear, i don't give a damn' was actually in the original book. amusingly, almost every instance of 'damn' comes in the form of 'damn yankees.'
