Thinking about getting my dad a book for christmas. The only things I know about his taste at the moment are that he likes carl hiassen, janet evanovich, humor, and light content that doesn't require a lot of thought or analysis. Any suggestions would be more than welcome. Thanks!

Sparkle Hayter immediately springs to mind.

Also Christopher Moore and Bill Fitzhugh.

Try the tony Valentine series by James Swain: Grift Sense - Funny Money - Sucker Bet - Loaded Dice - Mr. Lucky - Deadman's Poker - Deadman's Bluff (those are in order).

Also, there's Tim Dorsey's series, set in Florida (they're amusing): Florida Roadkill - Hammerhead Ranch Motel - Orange Crush - Triggerfish twist - The Stingray Shuffle - Cadillac Beach - Torpedo Juice - The Big Bamboo (again, it's a series and the books are listed in order).

Enjoyable, but a little more "heady" (not much, but a step above the mass-market paperbacks) are the Inspector Montalbano series [I love these!]) by Andrea Camilleri - The Shape of Water - The Terra-Cotta Dog - The Snack Thief - Voice of the Violin - Excursion to Tindari - The Smell of the Night - Rounding the Mark (again, in order).

Then there's the two "Bangkok" books by John Burdett: Bangkok 8 - Bangkok Tattoo. These are quite entertaining.

Hope this helps!

Oh, you could also try the Joe Sandilands series by Barbara Cleverly - The Last Kashmiri Rose - Ragtime in Simla - The Damascened Blade - The Palace Tiger - The Bee's Kiss (in order).

Or the Erast Fandorin series by Boris Akunin (though they're being translated out of order!) - The Winter Queen - Murder on the Leviathan - Turkish Gambit - Death of Achilles (it's a fun series but, on second thought, it might be better to wait until more are translated and published, 'cause I recall being frustrated by not having the backstory on several of the characters and references to critical incidents that I didn't know squat about).

I loved Colin Cotterill's series set in Laos - The Coroner's Lunch - Thirty-Three Teeth (the two in paperback so far).

If your father's at all out-dorsey, you can't go wrong with anything by Patrick F. McManus. Off the top of my head: The Grasshopper Trap - Never Sniff a Gift Fish - They Shoot Canoe's, Don't They? - Real Ponies Don't go Oink! - A Fine and Pleasant Misery - The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw - Rubber Legs and White Tail-Hairs - etc. (These are marvelously funny, I swear!)

Btw - Hiaasen has a new novel being released next week; might make a decent hoiday gift.

Too right about McManus, MsLaura! And thanks for all the other suggestions - so many books, and several future plane trips in the offing :)

No problem, Jaq - I've been on a "light" reading jag for the last bit, so I'm kinda up on the fluff. And I'm glad to know there's a fellow McManus fan around - his stuff just slays me, especially when I'm having a lousy day.

Anyway, I have most of the above-listed books here in the apartment and if you ever want to borrow any, just let me know - I'd be glad to know that they're being read.
