Do you read before going to bed if yr drunk? I do, out of habit I guess, but it's an exercise in futility. :(

Yes, but you're right - I need to read most of it again the next day to work out what's going on.

Are there good books to read when you're drunk?

I was in Seattle at the poetry bookstore the other day and had a raging cold (which is not unlike being drunk, I guess) and I opened the books up and there were words words words inside them and I thought "well that's useless!" and I was like, I just want a book with maybe one word per page, that's all I can handle right now. But I couldn't find such a book.

I can look at pictures, and look at words as if they are pictures, when drunk/ill. But that is all. An infant's board book, of colors or baby animals, might be the right speed.

I find stream-of-consciousness literature to be particularly good for reading drunk, for instance Ulysses by Joyce or The Unfortunates by B.S. Johnson. With Ulysses, though, it does kind of depend on how you want to read the book - reading drunk is best for appreciating the humour and wordplay, but if you want to do any serious thinking about it, perhaps wait until you're sober. The Unfortunates by its very nature works amazingly whilst drunk, and actually could be more emotional (but this may be me overstating my case/being a sad drunk).

I keep reading the thread title as "I'll Be Drunk". And thinking "oh, yeah!"

This is basically why I was finally able to pretty much stop drinking. I eventually figured out I wanted to read more than I wanted to be drunk.

Reading while drunk may not be great, but reading while DRINKING is ace. Just stop before the grey haze consumes all.

I'm putting the "reading while drinking" theory to the test. Posting while drinking is certainly a fine occupation!

I am rarely if ever drunk. IF I am, I never read.

I would only read drunk if were on a train, on the way home from something, and needed to be less drunk in order not to throw up/fall asleep and miss stop. Having to focus on the words and keep my mind on the story has kept my shit together on more PATH rides than I can think about.

OK Dear Mr Henshaw is an intriguing suggestion. I'll try to hunt down a copy and save it for next time I get drunk.
