I'm so happy for him. I love I Sailed with Magellan and while The Coast of Chicago is more spotty it contains brilliance as well.

I have the Coast of Chicago, but have only read the first couple of stories. But his story "Breasts" is a masterpiece. Easily the best short story from the past few years. I'm desperate to go to Western Michigan's MFA program - he's one of the writers there.

Not for the next three years-- he's in residence at Northwestern, according to the articles I've read.

"Breasts" is magnificent, other favorites are "Pet Milk," "Lunch at the Loyola Arms," "Live From Dreamsville"-- all of Magellan, really. The one in a recent New Yorker was a bit of departure, still good, belongs on this thread.

Regardless of where he is (and God damn it if you're right, WMU is the sort of place I can get into), I've heard he is a great teacher, too. The same can't be said for a lot of other writers, from some MFA people I've talked to.
