Is it rude to take a galley to a book signing?

I'm going to see William Gibson tonight, and I grabbed by advance copy of Pattern Recognition since it's probably the 'coolest' thing I have by his, and my favorite novel of his in a long time. But is it rude to get something signed that I clearly didn't pay for?

In my opinion, it is not nearly as rude as bringing several 1st editions, none of which you have read or plan to read, then pushing your way to the front of line, camera in hand to secure the authenticity of the signatures, after sitting (or worse pacing) impatiently during the author's discussion.

Ryan McKay (Ryan McKay), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. No worries about that, then.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You might have bought it second hand. They sell a lot of those advance copies on ABE and other book sites, you know. You get a lot of money for them if they're in good condition, and especially if they're signed.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

True. I did get it when I was working at a bookstore...I guess I mostly don't want him to think that I'm getting it signed in order to sell it (because I'm not) (unless I really need the money).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think he'll care. He's signing stuff anyway. Now, if you crashed his sister's wedding and asked him to sign it, he might think you were a bit of a git.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool. I guess Canadians are pretty laid back anyways.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend talk withdrawn library books to a book signing once, the author didn't seem to mind...

Simon Armitage was a bit snarky when I got him to sign a proof copy of All Points North once, but at least he saw the funny side and wrote "the proof of the pudding, best wishes ......" in the cover

chris (chris), Friday, 13 February 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And then you sold it to his mum in a charity bookshop.

I like to get them to sign books by other authors and tell me what they think of it.

my signed copy of fahrenheit 451 was stolen from the library. i had him sign right under the "skyline elementary" stamp on the blurb page. he gave me this look like "you are one messed-up little sixth grader".

now i am old enough to know he is the messed-up one.

La Lechera, Monday, 13 October 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a big fan of Ariel Dorfman but the book I got him to sign for me was a copy of "the nanny and the iceberg" which really isn't among his better works :(

jim, Monday, 13 October 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

It might not be rude, but it sure was embarrassing to have to buy a copy of a book at the store Jonathan Franzen was talking @, him ask me "have you read this?" to which I could only reply "aaahm, nope". He was gracious enough to answer with "this is a real favourite of mine" (Strong Motion, which I've never come close to picking up and am now feeling so guilty about that I'm seriously thinking about reading it next)

I have a book signed by Terry Pratchett (I was very young) "Dear James, burn this book."

James Morrison, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 07:55 (seventeen years ago)

Back when I worked in a bookshop, I got Alasdair Gray's agent to get him to come in (as he was passing through) and sign my copy of the Anthology of Prefaces, which had just come out and which I had brought in first edition - very handsome it is too.

Anyway, when he came in, it was rather busy and I was rushing around a bit, eventually managed to duck out from behind my desk and speak to him.

'Hello young man,' (or whatever)
'Er, yep, Gamaliel Ratsey.'
'So, I hear your a fan of my work.' (as indeed I was then, and I'm sure I would be now if I ever read any, although with slight reservations about a certain parsimony about his prose - a touch of the Scottish schoolmaster perhaps)
'Yes, yes I am.'
'What is it you like about it?'
'Er,' I said wittily. 'Er.'

Then I stared for a bit, sweating, mind revolving like a dead planet.

'Er.'
'Would you like me to sign your book.'
'Yes,' I said, rather gauchely handing it over, like an awkward schoolgirl.

And he did. And then he left. Presumably to relay the contents of our gay repartee to his Caledonian confreres. Me and my f'ing peasant mind.
