Anybody read Tristram Shandy?

Am I alone in it dull and impenetrable? Say yes. I got through the first sixty pages last night and thought it was utter crap. But I had a stomach virus at the time, so I might be associating the two needlessly.

I'm about a hundred page away from finishing it, and I love it. But in small doses; I've been reading it on and off for about eight months, which is about sixteen or twenty times longer than it normal takes me to read a book that size. I can't put it down, but it's hard to concentrate on for long periods.

Yes. I loved it--I couldn't get enough of the sensibility, and it's been hard to take things seriously since. The trick, as August mentions, is to do it in doses. Try a chapter or two at a time until it takes over your mind.

Totally loved it. Been meaning to read it again. The punctuation alone is worth it!

The journey is the destination; he's not going going to take you anywhere. Just sit back and try to enjoy the ride.

I bought a second hand copy. Written in biro on the inside cover is 'ego head wank'.

I've never got beyond the first page.

Yeah, well, if you don't like ego head wanks, maybe you shouldn't be reading.

It wasn't you, was it?

I'm intrepid, but TS beat me.

So did Humphrey Clinker, by Sterne's mate Smollett.

Give me "She Stoops To Conquer", any time. Or "Les Liaisons Dangereuses".

Those seem like different species of books entirely!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 19 February 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I haven't read much eighteenth-century stuff, so I was scraping around.

I read it for my fiction class almost four years ago. I've never thought I would enjoy a 18th century novel but to my surprise it was
really good

this book was so meant
for me that it's rather sick.
it's the way I think.

Getting back into form, eh?

Now I'm flipping through my copy and yes, I think I need to read this again.
