So what did we think of Sylvia?

Just got Sylvia on DVD, since it was cheaper to order from North America rather than cough up for two tickets at my local cinermar.

What did we think?

Ehh... haven't seen it yet, but the trailer looked deadly dull. I saw Christine Jeffs' first flick, Rain, and I really liked it. It's something like the cinematic hybrid of Ang Lee and David Lean. Sorta. Anyway, it's really beautiful and there's a great and uncomfortable undercurrent of sexual claustrophobia that I found fairly unique. But as for Sylvia? You'll have to work hard to convince me it's worth watching (what I presume to be) another weepy melodrama about a poet (author, artist, musician) who feels marginalized by [gender/religion/sexual orientation/race/social status/etc,] and eventually takes their own life.

But, I'll admit, I'm basing my cynicism on a two minute marketing segment. Any good?

Mocking, painful performance by Paltrow (likely accompanied by shitty direction - how could they let her get away with such an insipid portrayal of depression/madness) coupled with scenes which reinforce many misconceptions about Ted's contributions to their home-life. After reading her diaries (an intrusion I sometimes regret), I can understand if Paltrow found much of Plath's character to be contemptable; however, her mannered, immature, and ultimately derisive portrayal was far beneath her abilities as an actress. Her interactions (especially early on - particularly the scene where they are playing word games) with Hughes are interesting and fairly well done, but otherwise I would rather not have seen this movie.

Making a biopic of someone who laid bare nearly every detail of her life and inner-workings seems kind of unecessary anyway.

The movie was extremely boring and dishonest. Even if Plath were not a real person and this was just fiction, it would still be a bad movie.

I hampered Kid Sister's potential enjoyment of the film by screaming at the screen each time an inaccuracy presented itself. (I found the treatment of Sylvia's mother particularly irritating)

Next time I watch this, it'll be the Sylvia Plath Drinking Game. Frieda Hughes will no doubt be unamused.

I'd rather see the Assia Wevill movie.
