Anyone have any opinions about electronic literature?

Never been a fan of it, for 2 reasons: I don't like reading on a computer; and I like to keep stories and tales separate from text adventure video games, which I liken hypertext to.

Berkeley Sackett (calstars), Sunday, 21 December 2003 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a fan - I download and read. Books are so expensive in Australia now, and the things you find on the web can be a lot more interesting, if you are patient.

I search on non-fiction topics usually and stack 'em all up in a thick wad of A4. Not as romantic as a nicely bound book... but I do find a kind of romance or excitement in the process.

I had in mind things that were written specifically to be read in an electronic medium. This is the kind of stuff I mean. Personally, I like it a lot, but I can see why some people wouldn't. Berkeley's first critique is a really pervasive one, and probably the biggest obstacle for e-lit right now.

I thought hypertext was really just a choose your own adventure/role playing sort of game. is it not?

Well, yeah, sorta. I'd like to think "serious" hypertexts are a bit further up the literary food chain than choose-your-owns. The choices that are offered to you -- the links imbedded in each page -- are, I think, less plot-oriented, more associative or thematic.
