I just finished this. Because of this thread. I was very impressed, and yes, touched by his perceptions, his sensitivity, and his courage. If you can find it, try "Expecting Adam" by Martha Beck.

"The Diving Bell and The Butterfly" is one of those books that I have to give to friends. Because you can't really talk about it - you just say "Read this! And then call me!" It is the triumph of the human spirit - something we cynics tend to dismiss. Plus, he's French, and you keep on thinkng he's going to light up a Galoise and sip some absinthe as he narrates. It's simply a beautiful, beautiful book.

It's hard to think of anything LIKE "Diving Bell.." , but if you like memoirs I would suggest "Running With Scissors". (Augusten Burroghs) The memoir genre is often derided, but I think it's post-apocalyptic. After living with the threat of annhilation, belly button gazers write about their fears. Some of this stuff is brilliant - I do draw the line at pseudo novels that claim to be about the zeitgeist. "The Nanny Diaries" (have not read it) springs to mind.Because I turn to Austen when I want to read about people who are much wealthier than me.
